OT: Echo weed wacker

I have an Echo SM225 weed eater that has not run right since I've owned it. if I fiddle with the choke it will run well enough to get the job done. i'm pretty sure that a minor carb. adjustment would cure it but I do not see any way to adjust it. echo's site says take it to a dealer. I should have done that right away but now it's long out of warranty. anyone know of a way to adjust this carb??

Just take it to a dealer and be done with it.

I have a pole chain saw and it takes a circle D tool to adjust the carb. Ethanol ruined the diaphragm, no kits but new carb was only 20 bucks and did not need adjusting. Installed carb and went back to work. Now using ethanol free fuel.

Robert,Your options are.
1-Take it to a dealer for a carburetor adjustment.
2-Get adjustment tools and adjust it yourself, tools about the same cost as a replacement carburetor.(but you would have them for the next one/time)
3-get a replacement carburetor.

I'll second this, and suggest that you do it NOW before the repair shops get swamped.

It might be the carb and it might not. An air leak in the crank case can do the same thing.

I took it to the dealer. turns out it has a 5 year warranty. mhe told me that echo engines require mid-grade or premium fuel to run properly. also there is a better grade of 2 cycle oil that has a FD on the bottle. it sounded like a lot of hooey but he drained my tank, put premium fuel with the FD oil, & ran it for about 10 minutes. guess what........it worked! who'd a thunk it?

I have three SRM series straight shaft Echo string trimmers including one SRM225 and one small chain saw. I purchased the first trimmer 25 years ago and the SRM225 three or four years ago. They all run fine on regular pump gas and the only problem I have had other than the cheap a$$ primer bulbs splitting was stuck rings in the oldest one. That was 15+ years ago and probably from using stale fuel left over from the previous Fall. I now keep a supply of primer bulbs on hand and I don't use old fuel. I just today used the SRM225 for the first time this year. A fresh fill of fuel, started on the second or third pull, and ran flawlessly....

YMMV,

I took the muffler apart on mine and gutted it I did not see were it was restricted but whut the ell its now loud and runs great... If I had to do another I would drive a few holes in it with nails..

I live close to an Indian reservation they have corn free fuel in premium that's all I use in everything especially My 8N and my Ferris lawn mower.

I had the same problem. What it turned out to be was the gasket/grommet that the fuel and air tube go through into the gas tank had cracked. It was not creating enough vacuum I guess to pull the fuel into the carburetor. I could push the fuel bulb till it filled, it would start right up, and then cut of cause of lack of fuel. I was told all the same things. The carburetor is clogged because of ethanol in the gas. All of that might be true, but I bought a replacement grommet for a couple bucks and it fixed my problem. Check that out first.

I'm glad it was a simple fix and your dealer was able to get you in quickly. I have the SRM 225 as well and it's one of the easiest starting trimmers I've ever had and has far more power than it seems it ought to given the size of the engine. For my own 2-stroke engines, I use Husqvarna or Echo synthetic oils and 91 octane, 100% gasoline and have always had good luck.
