cut out relay

I have a 9n with 6volt system. Replaced the old cut out which was a couple of years old with a new one. Tractor ran fine for approximately 20 hours. Then while running tractor I saw the amp gauge was not showing a charge. Removed the cap on the relay and saw the insulation melted bubbling up and keeping the contact points in the relay from touching. Any suggestions as to the cause. Thank you, Bobmadd

Bob........you had a BAD relay. Replace it, simple, eh? Remember to polarize yer new relay. Just "arc-spark" the two terminals together. Me? I use a pair of pliers handles to connect the terminals together. Engine OFF!!! .......electrical Dell

try cleaning the gunk out of the contacts and get them moving free. if it still works, watch your amp gauge.

If it does not work, you will need a new cutout relay, but you have options.

I have seen them relays cost more than an 8n voltage regulator. In a pinch you can grab an 8n vreg and just use the bat / arm
connections.

heck.. if you really want to.. you can do a little minor surgery on the genny and convert it to using a vreg from a naa by
feeding the 3rd brush wire with the field from the naa vreg. ;)

Or do a little more surgery and simply use a 8n vreg.

or, get a big diode capable of 25a and use that...

Teddy......where didja learn electricity? I have an FCC 1st Class License that sez I know sumptin about electricity. Besides the fact that I have a degree in electronics. And yes despite yer claim, BOTH the cut-out relay and the DC genny haffta be polarized, engine OFF. Iff'n you don't polarized the cut-out, it won't disconnect the battery when you turn the ignition OFF. And you'll end up with discharged battery. (frown) Since ittza simple matter of quickly connecting the 2-terminals of the cut-out, engine OFF, due itt. WHY??? 'cuz many neubie tractor mechanic wanna bees connect the 6-volt battery, negative (-) ground just like their 12-volt BelchFire-V8. Surprizingly enuff, starter motor don't care positive (+) or negative (-) ground; still turns the correct way to start yer engine. And while there are some obscure advantages to positive (+) ground fer yer sparkies, Modern sparkies are so much better than the original. Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025......respectfully, electrical Dell

You can prove it to yourself some time by taking the gen wire off the cut out then polarize the gen by hooking up the battery opposite polarity, and polarize the gen only. Then put the wire back on, start it up & it should read backwards on the ammeter. shut it off and be amazed that the cut out works just like before. FYI it is the spring that opens the points in the cut out.

I used to have trouble with my battery going dead because the contacts would stick. I got tired of either tapping the cutout or disconnecting the battery. So I ordered some diodes ( bridge rectifier ) off of ebay ( got 4 cuz they were cheap ). I took the contact unit out of the can and replaced it with a diode. Even if you leave the key on the battery will not discharge because the diode will not allow current to flow backward. I have not had a problem since I did that and it was a few years ago.
