Starter problem

The starter that all of sudden would not
turn the engine over looked fine and the
flywheel did also. Installed a quarter inch
shim behind the starter and it started like
a new tractor

Sumthin just ain't right...Must not be getting good ground every now and then--maybe getting ground enough to spin the starter but not pull the drive into the ring gear teeth..Yea, I'm grasping for straws.......

That starter sits on the flywheel and when the engine starts the starter goes forward. For some reason the starter was not coming all the way back it liked a quarter inch

To30man,Some of the newer starter drives (Not the OEM ones wit the big spring),require a new pin hole to be drilled through the shaft 1/2" closer to the armature plate. Also The NEW & IMPROVED "clutch" style bendix drive uses the original pin-hole in the starter shaft.
