Bad flywheel ?

Took my starter off the 8n I have been working on a couple months and it looked good and worked good. The tractor has been turning over fine since I got it a couple months back. I got it running good last week and used it a couple hours. The next day the started would spin but not the engine. I rolled it off and used it an hour and turned it off and did the same thing. The flywheel looks and feels worn is it normal for it to start fine and then all at once not catch at all. What would bee the chance it stopped on a good spot for 100 plus cranks and now stopping on a bad spot. I never split a tractor and really don't have a good spot to do it but I thinks I got to many new parts installed to stop now. New alternator, gas bowl and cut off,new manifold and pipe, new spring under gear shifter, points and condensor, switch, wiring harness plugs

Why not pull the starter and look/feel to check the flywheel ring gear condition where it has stopped..they pretty much stop the same place every time has been my observation..

To30man ,Time to pull the starter off for inspection of the bendix drive on your starter for missing drive, broken gear or striped drive teeth. Also check the flywheel for damage, rolling the engine over one complete revolution with a pry bar.If he ring gear teeth are damaged in one area on the back side of the flywheel ring gear it needs to be replaced.But-one way around that problem is if your tractor is 12 volt and the teeth are still at least 1/2 there in the bad spot, you could get a different type starter and maybe get by for years with that ring gear. This starter works off the front side of the ring gear where the teeth would still be good.

Looks like a good way to go..I had not seen those before..Reckon it would be more likely to knock the ring gear off since they are just press fitted? Wont knock mine off-it is welded in several spots..

Has anyone ever shimmed the starter a quarter inch or will that mess something up. There is some wear on the flywheel but nothing broke and the starter is not turning the engine at all

To30man.......while there are many causes fer the complaint, lets try the eazy stuff first. You do know the starter drive gotta be squeeky clean, don't you??? Try hozing it off real good with brake shoe cleaner ($10-cheap) while ittza still in the tractor. Ya know, remove the 8-in screws and pull the starter motor out about 1/2 in and squirter away. Ford even built in 2-drain holes fer just this problem. ........the amazed Dell

Look at the drive were I have red arrows at the teeth that lock the drive if it will spin both ways its shot. You may have to mess with it to get it to ratchet in all teeth positions if it skips in any one the drive is shot.

Its the down side to the newer positive drive it needs to be spun fast to unlock... Idle are just off idle won't do it on some of'em...
