9n 12 volt problems no crank

I'm having problems once again.

This is a 12 volt - ground conv.w/ 12 volt coil and bypass safety starter button to a button to aftermarket push button on dash.

Went to start it,turned key to run .then pressing button on dash I Hurd a electronic popping sound from solenoid.so I continue to try to start it.it eventually turned the starter and tractor fired up.but the starter kept running. I turned the key to kill the tractor and engine stopped but starter kept running. I disconnected battery and starter stopped.

I went to napa with the three-point selenoid that was installed with my conversion. got a similar solenoid 12v, installed it .then reconnect battery, and starter didn't run when battery reconnected.so I thought everything was good.

Now I turn key ,push button on dash and I get nothing at all.no movement on amp meter nothing. I guess I need to get volt meter out and trouble shoot.

I'm not the smartest man when it comes to this stuff.if I need to take pics and post here if it will help I will .I just want to know where to start guys.

This is a great site I visit everyday.thanks to all that comment and all that have helped me before.

Another 12-volt convulsion...try and GOOGLE or BING JMOR's wiring diagrams or just go to the other Ford N-Series Tractor site for all the correct ways to wire these machines -either original 6-volt/positive ground or 12 volt conversion. By-passing the safety neutral switch is not a good idea. That will allow the tractor to start in gear -a big no-no.

Believe me I know , i might bite the bullet and just rewire the whole tractor.iv almost ran myself over this winter lol.so I'm fully aware of the dangers.

Its nice out this weekend and I wanted to get it running to disk garden.

You may have gotten the wrong 3 wire solenoid.
If the other wire from your push button connects to power
you need the automotive style. If it connects to ground you
need the tractor type. Difference is in the internal wiring.
Another possibility, if your other wire goes to ground and
you have the tractor style solenoid it has to be oriented the
right way to work. Starter and battery cables cannot be
swapped side-to-side or it won't energize.
Personally, I'd fix the neutral safety switch and not use a
solenoid on a 9N so it doesn't start in gear and run me over.

" i might bite the bullet and just rewire the whole tractor"

An excellent idea. (tips 27& 42)

Using one of JMOR's diagrams & for less than $100, you can replace every wire on the tractor. And you will be able to safely & reliably start the tractor. (tip # 28)

Guys ,if I order a 12 wire harness for my 9n can I use the factory solenoid?I have the one wire alt,12 volt battery,

Is there anything else I should order?I want to keep it 12 volt as I want to run lights front and back and put a winch up front.

I can spend time this weekend getting the hood off and prepping to rewire.thanks guys for talking me into it.and when I'm done I will fully understand how this machine works.and will know every connection is good and tight.

" can I use the factory solenoid"

The 9N never had a "factory solenoid". It had a mechanical start switch. Just like a Model A. When you press the neutral safety switch, it manually depress a rod into the starter switch.

Is that what you are calling a solenoid? Or does your conversion have n actual solenoid?

(BTW, if you don't have the manuals, this would be a good time to get them; see tip # 39)

Im guessing its a starter switch, its below the battery .has two post's for wires and two bolts holding it to tractor.the mechanic I had out here for the 12v convulsion.left it on tractor and installed a solenoid directly above it with two bolts going into the tractor.

I do have the fo-4 manual as well as a thick ford service manual.as I look though them I don't see the part I just discribed.so I'm assuming its more junk somebody before me added

Iv never owned a model a ford,I would like one though. Iv included some pics.so maby it will help.i need to know what stays and what goes.the part in my hand has ford printed on it and was where the solenoid is now

Iv tryed uploading a pic didn't work of course....I'm frustrated and I'm gonna rip the hood off and prep .thanks for all your help guys.I'll follow up next weekend when I get the new harness on

Yea, sounds like the manual starter switch to me. If you have the manuals & get JMOR's wiring diagram, you should be good to go.

I think you need a magic decoder ring to post pics. Look around on this page; you might find some instructions/1
