Rockshaft bushings

Are the rockshaft bushings supposed to be steel or bronze, I have one of each on mine and I was just wondering what they were supposed to be.

I'm with Hobo, bronze is all I have seen also. They should be brass as a sacrificial wear point for the rock shaft and housings.Maybe someone in the past time made one from steel thinking it would last forever or the bronze bushings were unavailable. Is the shaft worn on that side now?

That doesn't have anything to do with aluminum shavings from the cam gear . How did you get there ? LOL .

My tractors sit outside  and I believe they get a lot of water in the hydraulic oil from the clearance between the shaft and the bushings . I have drilled / tapped holes through the cover and bushings and added grease zerks to get grease in that gap . I have added dash 228 or 229 O-rings ( I dont recall ) on the shaft between the bushings and center pivot arm . 5 or 6 ? on each side was enough to apply pressure to help seal to shaft and bushings . The grease from the zerks should force any contaminated grease out by the lift arm . Even without the grease fittings , the O-Rings should help seal out contaminates .

I have fought enough lift arms I don't want to ever do that again . After wire wheeling and bead blasting the arms and shaft I applied anti seize and can slide the arms on without beating it with a hammer . There are a few parts that will get removed and recoated with anti seize on a yearly maintenance schedule .

No the shafts not worn the top cover on this tractor looked like someone had left 3 or 4 bags of fertilizer on it for a year or two and it was corroded and pitted really bad. So I got another top cover from the bone yard and will use my stuff on it. I managed to get one arm off with a LOT of heat and a huge puller. The other arm I pressed off the shaft. That's when I found the steel bushing. It looked kinda sketchy to me so I will just get 2 new bushings. Doing all of this while I am waiting on sleeves and pistons to get here.

ALUMINUM CAM GEAR Yeah that's funny right there LOL. I was reading some of the old posts and I think I am going to drill the 1/8 inch holes for locking the lifters while I am here. I m waiting on my sleeves, pistons and lifters to get here so I figured I would either hit my big toes with a hammer or work on this tractor both seem to inflict the same amount of pain.

Bronze.

Flip the rock shaft end for end when you replace the bushings to wear it on the opposite side.

Skip,I use a 3/16" drill bit to drill the lifter holding holes in the block.1/8"might be a little small to hold a tough lifter adjustment bolt, and some of them are tough.
