A man once told me the 3K mi. oil change was a number they picked out of the air because the customer would think he could go coast to coast before he would need to change his oil
and at the same time keep a steady supply of customers at the local mechanic's shop. Don't know if it was true or not. Saw a commercial about a Mobile oil
formulated to change once a year. Anybody know if we have come that far with technology or is
it just 1960s Penns 30W they found in a warehouse and put in their bottle.

Dunno but the effects of a extended oil change can not be reversed cheaply...

I would have no problem today going coast to coast and back coast to coast and changing the oil when I found the time when I got back home.

My little trip to get a biscuit 2 times a week it get changed at 3K are 1 yr wither it needs it are not...

Virtually all new car manufacturers specify somewhere between 5k and 15K for OCI and most say once a year at a minimum. My two late model BMW's say 15K under perfect conditions and using an approved oil.

The industry is also moving very quickly to the use of condition based monitoring (CBM) - e.g. the computer keeps tabs on your driving habits and conditions and calculates the OCI based on that use. The algorithm makes some assumptions about the type and quailty of the oil being used so cut rate oils are going to cause problems with it's reliability. Again - regardless of conditions or mileage most condition based monitors insist on once a year at a minimum.

If you want to take the guesswork out of it send a sample of your engine oil out for a used oil analysis at around 5000 miles. That will give you a good indication of remaining life if any and if your car has an oil monitor how well it is tracking the lab results.

When I sold Amsoil synthetic for years the company claim of 25,000 miles or one year really bothered me.

It seemed to me that they failed to add the qualifier that the only realistic way to realize that extended drain time was to install an added bypass oil filtration system on an engine or at least to change the spin-on frequently over that time frame.

I did install several bypass filtrations units.

Not me. I know my owners manual says 5K ~ 7.5K.
Remember the oil change stickers on the inside of your windshield?
I change it every 5K. No sticker. Just every 5K. 5, 10, 15, 20 etc.
Easy to remember, no stickers, no worries. It doesn't cost much.
Cheap, actually. Even with synthetic. Compared to the alternative.

Generally I change my oil every 5000 miles . However I have one vehicle I bought many years ago from a guy who had used only Mobil 1 Extended Protection 15000 mile oil. It is a Jeep Liberty. He changed the oil every 15000 miles. I bought it with ~60,000 miles on it and after reviewing the extensive maintenance records he kept I decided to continue his process. The Jeep now has over 160,000 miles and runs like new, doesn't use any oil. I change the oil every 15000 miles. Frankly I am pretty impressed. The oil is NOT cheap.

Just info: Hyundai dealership that sees my Elantra once in a while said they put 10W30 Castrol in everything they change..book says 7500 between changes-I do 5000..

See Hobo and TOH comments below. Everyone's driving habits and conditions are different. I rely on the computer in my cars to tell me when to change the oil. Usually occurs between 7500 to 8500 miles. No problems and have been doing this for the last eight years or so.

Get a diesel and add an "oil mate" 500,000 mile oil change interval with 100,000 mile filter change.

Seems I can remember seeing signs that read, "Quaker State, the 2,000 mile Oil, (or Kendall?)," back years ago. I've run 5w20 Mobil One in my 02 F150 V8 since it was broke in; 283,000 miles and not a noise. It gets changed every 10,000 mile more or less. gm

Gary,

You brought back old memories. Whenever i rebuilt an engine with By-pass filtration, the 10W Non-detergent I always used for break-in was Kendall or Quaker State.

Esso had a non-detergent called Mineralube as well.

I purchased a new Buick while working at a shop that if you worked on Saturday as an incentive you could change your vehicle's fluids for free after work. So I changed the oil in the new Buick every other Saturday and my Corvette the other Saturdays. The new Buick's engine gave out before 72,000 miles with low power and burning a quart of oil every 300 miles. The Corvette today has 176,000 miles on it. The Buick just had a "bad engine" that was not caused by not changing the oil. By the way since it was free, I also changed the transmission fluids, antifreeze, power steering fluid, and brake fluids on a frequent time period.
