Donut seal on air intake to air filter

I'm putting my '49 8N back together after installing a late-model steering box. I put my hood back on, and cannot get the air intake on the hood to line up with the hole at the top of the oil-bath air cleaner/filter canister. The canister hole is about 1/4" further forward than the donut, so there is a gap at the sides between the hole and the donut.

I've slid the canister as far back as the mounting holes will allow. I don't recall this gap before I took it all apart, but the hood and canister seem to be mounted properly.

Any suggestions on getting a seal, or at least what is supposed to pass as one?

thanks.

Timsch,Maybe you can slot the holes in the air cleaner mounting bracket so that it can be centered up in the hood hole. Then a grommet can be put in the hole for the pipe.If you cant find one, a grommet can be made from a piece of small vacuum tubing by splitting it and super gluing the ends together.

Slight difference in steering column support that dash mounts to? Rear lip on hood goes over top of dash, I was trying to put mine behind,
which will not work.

Difference in the new steering box mounts could explain it. The hood is over the dash, as it was before.

I had considered slotting either the mounting bracket on the filter housing or the air intake bracket. The air intake would be easier, and is probably what I'll do if it turns out I've got it back together right.

Try loosening the air cleaner mounting bolts a tad so the unit is movable. Connect the rubber hose to the carb and air intake tube on one end and to the top of air tube and leave clamps loose. Play around with positioning of air cleaner til satisfied then tighten down air cleaner first, then hose clamps.
