Hydraulic touch control lever help

Needing some help/advice on hydraulic touch control lever on '52 8N. Hydraulics work but control level needs to be cycled from raised to lowered to get lift arms to raise, the position of the level is never the same when the arms are at the top. I was wondering, after looking at the exploded view in the parts catalog, if it could be the woodrift pin holding the the shaft to the lever is broken and the shaft just binding on whats left of the pin. I have taken the right side inspection plate off and found no leaks from the piston or the pressure relief valve. Trying to get an idea of what the problem could be before I start tearing things apart. Any help would be appreciated.

That's highly unlikely.

Chances are much, much more likely that you have a dirty pump.

Remove an inspection plate & cycle the touch control lever while observing the control rod. They should move in tandem. Post back w/ what you find.

When I took the inspection plate off and moved the lever, the rod moved in sync with the lever and moved the valve out and in, but the lever could move past where the valve's maximum outward movement stops and then I would have to move the lever all the way up or down to get it to move again. I hope I am explaining myself well enough.

e] The lever would then end up in a different position, say half way to raise or lower the blade, so not giving me any adjustment on the lever

Hi Bruce , after cleaning the grass of the draft spring found this plate, could this be the issue?

Good job on diagnosing your problem. Likely caused by not observing tip # 34.

Order an adjusting jig from Zane Sherman: http://www.bramblett.com/zane/

You will need that to adjust the lift once you get it repaired.

Pull the lift cover & get it on the bench. The lift cover weighs nearly 100 lbs with the upper lift arms attached, & is very hard to maneuver. An engine hoist is an excellent idea. Remove the seat and spring, disconnect the upper lift arms at the knuckles. Remove the 14 bolts that hold the cover to the housing. (note that there are three different lengths) DO NOT remove the four nuts under the seat! Remove the right side inspection cover so you can remove the control rod tip from the pump intake valve. Lift the back of the cover straight up and slide a piece of wood under the cover to keep the tip of the control rod out of the rocker shaft. Once you are sure the control rod is out of the rocker shaft, you can then remove the cover.

If you are very, very lucky, the spring plates & base is the extent of the damage. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Once you get it on the bench, get out your MPC (tip # 39) and ID the broken/bent parts and post lots of pics (using the correct part name & number will save you a lot of time & effort). Plenty of folks around here can help you with the repairs.
