Uh Oh, looks like Bertha is in semi retirement

After serving me well for 16 years my beloved 48 8N has been moved to 2nd place in the stable.

Today I bought a Kubota L285 4 cylinder Diesel with a 6 foot woods belly mower. It has new rear tires and a new battery. Everything works well and as much as I love 'Ol Bertha, I have to admit that the 'bota is one heck of a lot more tractor.

I'm not a big fan of the belly mower since it essentially renders the 3 point hitch useless, but my wife loves it and the plan is that she will cut some of the grass now that she doesn't have to deal with all of the 8N's "difficulties".

Of course I will still use Bertha, but she won't be our main work horse any more.

Here is a picture

Good score ! A pal of mine just got a 245 with a loader, roto-tiller and some other stuff - he loves it. How may simoleons ? ( know it is rude to ask, but.........)

I got it for $3,500. I think it was a good deal, but of course others may disagree...

Nice tractor.
A little shorter but about the same weight
and hp as an N.
I don't know enough about them to know if
they have live pto and PS but would bet they
do. Would be a honey of a tractor if they
do. Has live hyds for sure.
For what I see people trying to get for Ns
here lately the price seems ok to me.
Bet that little diesel just sips the fuel.

I am not familiar with the 285 but that is a great price for a compact diesel tractor. It will be very frugal with fuel. I
would remove the belly mower and sell it. I have had a Kubota 3410 for 17 years. All I have done to it is change fluid and
filters per the book and one battery.

without a grass deflector your wife will picking blades of grass from between her teeth when the winds blow.

never used a belly mount before but i see a lot of advantages; first is being 2 wheel drive it distributes the weight more evenly to aid the front
tires and rears to do less damage to lawns. considering the grass deflector, it has more uses than personal convenience; noticing the tip of blade
placement in photo it helps to deter the placing of ones foot under the deck as well as preventing hard objects being sent air wards as
projectiles. help your wife love you more and replace seat. nice tractor, i have owned kubotas for 15 years now with great success. i agree with
others on price.

Ha, that made me chuckle. If only I had known that is all it would take to make her love me more :) :)

She LOVES the belly mower because she has trouble going around things with the rear mounted PTO finish mower. including just cutting a square plot of land. She never could grasp that the rear mounted mower was swinging way out as she rounded the corners and she would end up with goofy corners that she couldn't turn sharp enough to get around. So, the belly mower isn't going anywhere soon.

In addition to the fact that I don't like how it renders the 3 point useless, I also wonder about the safety of having those belts exposed. I have told her that the same rules apply to this and with the 8N. One NEVER gets off the tractor with the PTO running.

Reasonable price for a 35+ year old Kubota ;-)

There should be a belt cover on the mower and it doesn't look like a Kubota deck. It's suspiciously similar to the ubiquitous Wood's belly mount L306 of about the same vintage....
