I am considering the jump to a laptop. DELL has a sale going on right now. we have had dell pc's in the past and had no problem with them but when my wife's work went to HP we got a HP as we could get a discount through her employer.

what basics would I need. just for home use. surfing the net, tractor forums, ebay, etc.

what say you ?

thanks.

I went lap top in 2007 when I quit work, I am typing this on the 2007 machine. The machine has been trouble free - I just purchased a new lap top since windows vista support is ending. Both machines are HP - I have been an HP fan since my first reverse polish HP calculator.

You should not need anything special just for e-mail and google. Getting use to windows 10 has been a challenge for me. The nice thing about a lap top is it can go with you when you travel.

Hi, Steve. Like you, I just need access to Google searches, discussion boards, online auctions and the like. I don't do anything that is graphics-heavy. With those basic requirements, just about any modern laptop should work. It comes down to price, quality, availability of service if needed. Personally, I'd be nervous about some of the really cheap brands. There has to be a reason they're cheaper. But I wouldn't be afraid of a Dell or an HP. I have an Apple MacBook Pro and love it, but I know it cost more than some other good machines. It was just the brand I had at work before retiring so felt comfortable sticking with what I knew. One thing about Apple is that it is less vulnerable to viruses, or so I'm told, but software can prevent viruses on just about all the machines out there. So these are just my perhaps-useless opinions.

I have a HP chrome book. It is very basic, has no disc drive. It's super fast and has Google security built in. Its called a browser and does everything you mentioned well. $250.00 new. We have windows 10 at work and I get by but don't go far out of my box.

If you buy one with one of the new Intel 7th Gen Kaby Lake
processors there is no driver support for Windows versions
older than Windows 10. May not matter if you don't mind
Windows 10, which I don't, but might be something to consider.

Be fair Gary, only one of your Windows 10 machines use that much.
I have four Windows 10 machines here in the house.
None of them are as bad as that one of yours is either.
I'm pretty sure its got something else going on besides updates.
Send it to me and I'll perform an exorcism to remove the demons. ;)

I'm thinking about sending it to you pretty soon!!!
We finally heard back from Spokane, about them doing Leslie's broken arm, BUT still do not know when they can get time/sched. for the Doctor. He is really busy right now, and his sched. is really tight.
He may have to un-do a little of what he did on the First operation, just to be able to make the arm strong enough again.!!
SO.....we are on a day to day waiting, to get her taken care of.

Just a hell of a lot going on here....... But NOT getting much accomplished!!!!.????????

Gary .......(call ya soon!!)[/i:f2d39f4528][/b:f2d39f4528]

I'm a big fan of the Dells. I bought one for each of my kids when they started college from the Dell Outlet Store. They're refurbished with the same warranty as new for a couple hundred cheaper and they lasted the kids through college and several years beyond. I've never had a HP go more than a couple of years and my current Lenovo ThinkPad had overheating issues until I slowed the processor speed. I even had an Acer for a couple of years but it was a dog. Bottom line - Dell held up the best

My daily usage machines are all Dell. Work included.

HP Servers used to guarantee a 99.9% uptime including maintenance.
That was running Windows. 99.99% running other OS's.
They may still. I really liked them for mid-range servers!

I fix a lot of HP laptops at my home business, so I like them too.
Although they are slower than most if the specifications are
the same between brands. Parts are sometimes pricey also.

We used to joke that Toshiba was an acronym for "Tons of
screws hidden in blind areas" and they deserved that acronym.
I do have a 2008 Toshiba running Windows 8.1 that takes 8
seconds from powering it on to a usable desktop.
That's faster than many new machines by far.
Too bad Toshiba doesn't make that model any more and I
haven't found another Toshiba that competes with it.

I have nothing but DELLS, two lap tops and one desk top. The old desk stop. studio 8100, with win 10 was getting real slow and real slow internet, so I did some cleaning and she works like a champ. Malware can really slow things to a crawl.
