Hi all !
I have a 1950 8n and i would like to replace the gear shift boot. i tried to turn the shift knob off with no luck. was the knob pressed on or threaded on ? any tips on removal will be appreciated. thanks. Ken

A bit of heat on the shift LEVER (not the knob) unless you have a nicely painted lever. Pipe wrench on the knob unless it is new
and if you can't buy another one. I have used both methods. Lefty loosey, righty tighty.

Heat on the shifter rod might help, heat it up cool it down with wet rags, heat it up again, do this a couple of time ,
It might work, if I remember correctly the shifter knob on my tractor had a threaded brass insert moulded into the plastic knob,
So you are dealing with dissimilar metals,

I wrapped the knob with duct tape to protect the outer surface, then used a strap wrench and it broke free,
Be sure as you reinstall the knob you coat the threads with anti seize, no problem getting it off next time,

Once you get over your problem with getting the gearshift knob off, you will be faced with the problem of getting the shift boot on. Depending on where you get the new boot, some go on easy and some go on hard.

Come back if you have any problems with that. It's a simple fix.

thanks Maxwell 99 and Caryc . When i get the boot i'll give you a holler if i have problems . Ken

You are correct, the knob has a threaded brass insert. The duct tape was a great tip. I just went out and removed my shifting knob as I have a new boot coming. It came right off using your method.

When you install the boot, warm it up in hot water and turn it inside out. Place it over the shifter shaft upside down and push it down. Now, roll it down just as you would roll down the cuff of your jeans. No problem! Works on Ford and B Allis.
