I installed a new lower seals in the pan. the new seals looks to petrude 3/8 of an inch above the pan. The pan gasket sticks over the seal so do I rim off the excess gasket or excess seal itself. My service manual just says to soak the seal 2 hrs before installing. wondered how you all do it. thanks

I would replace the upper seals too at this point your here so might as well an avoid problems next week and go back. Here is a good way to keep the chance of a leak down. Some soak some go dry its dealers call. I go dry. Set seal in place and trim ends proud. Dont cut too short. After trimming I offset the seams of the seals so they do not line up with the pan and block seams. Put a bit of silicone on the four ends of seals. For me silicone is a problem avoider and I use it on any place with or without a gasket. If I read you right I cut the pan gasket away so it lays next to the seal.

I have used the excellent write up on engine rebuilding on the other Ford N site. I put mine in dry and cut them slightly proud of the block and pan. I coated them with engine assembly lube after installed in the groove and let it soak in for a while, repeat coating them and take care to keep it off the end of the rope seal apply a small dab of silicone to the rope seal and a thin coat on the pan gaskets and assemble. if you google" 9n overhauling the engine part 2. " you can find the excellent write up, I have used it 3 times and no leaks.
