Why didn't my ORC work?

Here's a good one for you. I changed my 8N's PTO shaft to a 1 3/8" shaft just so I could use a quick disconnect ORC.

Well, I went out to mow this morning and hooked up the mowers shaft and went to work. I wondered why when I throttled down and stepped on the clutch to shift to reverse, I was getting a grinding from the trans. Well, I didn't force anything. After that if I needed to shift gears, I waited until the mower shaft stopped turning.

I got my mowing done and went inside to have a drink and cool off. Then I went outside to check up on that ORC and see why it didn't work like my old "pin on" ORC did. To my surprise, when I pulled the mower shaft off, THERE WAS NO ORC THERE !!!!!.

Guys, remember one thing, when you have a push button ORC, you have to put it on the tractor for it to work. Pretty embarrassing, I know, but I just went out there and hooked up that mower shaft like I always did and forgot about the new ORC. :oops: :oops: :roll: :oops: :oops:

No adjusting needed. The shaft is two piece. The piece on the mower is a square shaft about an inch and a quarter square. The outer shaft just slides onto that square shaft and drives the square shaft. If the mower goes up or down, the shaft will shorten or make itself longer, what ever is needed. As long as that outer shaft has enough clearance so it's not too close to the end of the square shaft it's fine. Here's a pic.

ORC's have a pin that holds it to the shaft . You remove the plugs or grease fittings and drive the pin out to remove the ORC from the shaft . When reinstalling you have to center the pin . If you drive it too far or not far enough it locks up the coupler .

Remove the plugs and see if the pin is centered . If not , tap it in a little more from the longest side until the unit spins . Then reinstall the plugs .

I've been guilty of the same thing, no problem.

I do every time before I mow. It has a grease fitting a couple inches from the end but I always pull the round shaft way out and grease the whole square shaft.
