To Groove or not to Groove

I'd like to get answers to a question here. The question is...did any of the "N" tractors with a 1 1/8" PTO shaft have the groove in them to accept a quick connect like the later 1 3/8" shafts did?

I mean actual eyes on a 1 1/8" shaft with the groove in it? I don't think there is such a thing. My 8N had a 1 1/8" shaft with no groove in it before I changed it out to 1 3/8".

Same here. Was just looking last week for a QD overrunning coupler only to discover my 8n PTO shaft doesn't have a groove.

(quoted from post at 19:15:31 03/13/17) My 2N and 8N have a groove and a hole in the 1 1/8 shaft

I really don't understand why if an earlier model like a 2N used a 1 1/8" shaft with the groove in it, why would later 8N models still have a 1 1/8" shaft without the groove?

It just doesn't make sense.

MAy not be original equipment, could have been changed at some time.

r maybe someone doesn't know a spline from a groove, as in the two old ones I removed from 8Ns have a hole and 6 'grooves' each.

Yeah, I thought of that but I just didn't want to insult anyone. Just to be clear, this is the groove I'm talking about.

Both of my old ones look to have had the groove machined into them. They are now sitting in the back of the shop as I went back with 1 3/8 in both

Are you saying that someone pulled the stock shafts out and machined the grooves into them?

I looked at both my old ones and the grooves were put into them with a grinder, hard to tell after years of running and grease

OK, so we're back to square one. None of the stock 1 1/8" pto shafts had the groove in them.

So why would they make a quick disconnect ORC with the 1 1/8" female? If they sold any of them, wouldn't people just keep returning them after finding that they can't use them?

Everything's still a mystery.

ord Ns are not the only tractors in the universe.

It would be rather easy to grind a groove.
Start the tractor with pto on, brace
yourself on a block of wood or somesuch and
grind it in with an angle grinder. Take it
easy - grind/test fit, grind/test fit.
I liked the QD ORCs a Lot better than the
one with a pin. Take it off/on as needed and
not have that clunky thing spinning all the
time.

Of course they're not. But if I sold a quick disconnect for a 1 1/8" PTO, I would add "Not for Ford Tractors" in the add so I wouldn't have to keep accepting returns. Wouldn't you?

f I were a half knowledgeable tractor person, I might (probably not really list all those that it does NOT fit), but if an Amazon flunky, probably not. His first post reference did say it was for Allis Chalmers & he wanted to know if it would work on his Ford. They did not say that it was for an N Ford.

OK, I guess all those people that sell them have never had one returned because it didn't fit the customers Ford.

Follow up question...

Anyone know when Ford started using a stock 1 3/8" PTO shaft?
