very loose gear shifter?

Forum,
I am working on a Pettibone Skid Steer with a Ford industrial diesel engine. Trying to figure out the age of the engine. Numbers on engine read: 1796-T17KB Type COPB 6005-A SO 2340. Does this give me the age of engine or cubic inch. Believe it is around 170ci.
Another question, the shifter on the rig is very loose. One can pull the shifter out of the gear box. It shifts gears without trouble. What can be done to maintain this situation or should I go the other way on this purchase?? Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

Ask on tractor talk or Ford boards - or
both. Bigger, more knowledgeable audiences
there.
You frequently ask question here and
usually get good replies.
Yet you often don't post back to say
whether the info helped or let responders
know that you even read it.
I've wondered.about that.

UD,
Sorry about not responding to answers given, utilized or not. Will do that in the future. As for latest question I have not received any replies from the other forums.
