THE GREAT SYCAMORE SIT IN.
In the spring of 1965 we sold Mr. Pruitt a new Ford 6000 selector speed tractor. Brand new!
When it came time to give it the first service I drove down in the service truck and found it sitting in a small field so I began my check list.
About that time I had the call of nature. Mr. Pruitt had obtained a outhouse that had been at the Black school there in Sycamore that was closed when the schools were integrated. He had it placed over a big ditch at the edge of the field. It was a pretty good built five holer and the door was sort of hanging there on it?s old rusty hinges but it could be closed if you pulled on it pretty hard on it. There were cracks in the boards of the door and light trickled in through them.
I had never been in it but it looked like the only place to go since it was the only building in sight. I went in and stood there in the dim light till my eyes got accustomed to the darkness and observed that the holes furthest from the door looked the least used so I went to the last hole and dropped my pants and sat down.
About that time that old drooping door was jerked open and a woman whirled around and sat down on the #1 hole and there I sat in the dim light back in the other end of the toilet. So what should I do? Should I say something to her or just sit there in the dark and maybe she wouldn?t see me and just get up when she was through and go back out the door? Should I say something like ? It?s a very nice spring morning isn?t it???
While I was trying to figure out what to do and not give her a heart attack finally after about 2 minutes she turned her head towards me and saw me sitting there. She screamed and hit that door so hard it flew off the old rusty hinges and went about 20 feet out into the field. Never did know who she was where she came from or where she went? We never were properly introduced. She did leave her nnalert on the floor in front of #1 hole.
I?m till this day still trying to think of what I should have said or done other than just sit there like a statue?
