Thank you in advance for the help. Do all 8n's have a ignition key? My tractor has two holes on left side below gauge. They both are pull knobs. I believe one is for the lights and I have no idea on the other. There is no key. All pictures I've seen seem to have a key. I bought this tractor not running. The person I bought it from said he thought alternator was the problem. I don't think so. He also thought it was a 9n but it is a 8n. I put battery in and push button and it turns over strong. Gas is on. I have not checked spark or fuel yet as I'm starting with the possibility there should be a key ignition. Thank you for any info !!

the tractor does not need a key switch, but it does need some kind of switch in the ignition circuit. i am wondering if the second knob u speak of is doing that job. i'd suggest u follow the wires from that mystery knob and see where they go. if one goes to the coil, you've found your ignition switch.

First, see tip # 39. You have a 60+ year old tractor; you need the manuals.
Next, Google "wiring diagrams JMOR". Find the one that fits your tractor.
The ignition switch provides power to the coil. Trace the wire from the coil; if it goes to the pull switch, then that is your ignition switch.

AFAIK, they all had a key switch originally, but things get changed.
Lots of different ways to wire an N. Some good, some not so good.
I would start with tracing the wire from the coil as mentioned.
Find out where that goes and what switch it connects to.
You are almost certainly correct that the alternator is not the
cause of a no start/no run problem. That's the charging circuit.
Ignition and starter will work fine without it charging.
