Bought this tractor couple weeks ago. Had a knocking sound in it. Changed oil in it. there was probably 3 inch of gook in the bottom of the canister. the old oil filter seemed to weigh couple pounds. oil was the blackest ive ever seen. not sure when he ever changed oil in it. He said it just started knocking and the tractor place told him it probably wouldn't last long. I finally took the pan off. nO 4 Rod seemed loose. Pulled bearing cap and there was a big problem. bearing had spun and what was left was more of a tin piece. Had to use a screw driver to pry it out. Journal looks good so I am going to put a new set of bearings in it. Anyone know the part number for the bearings for an 8n. Don't think the motor has ever been worked on. ive seen some on ebay but they talk about 20 and 40 thoudsands. just don't know which I need. its a 1951 8n ford. thanks norm

Hsve that rod resized or you will spin another.

pinball.......like sounder sez, mike the crankshaft journal, both sides as it may be tappered or barrel shaped. New oil filter fer Mercedes Benz is same as yer N-Tractor. ........HTH, the oily Dell

I'm sure that there has been some damage to the crank journal when the bearing spun. If you feel it is smooth enough to use you will need to mic it to check the size. I also would want to check all of the main and rod bearings before putting it back together.

If it is knocking and the bearing has spun the crank needs to be turned (machined) if you just put a new bearing on a bad journal you will have another bad bearing knocking in just a few hours. If its worth doing its worth doing right.

That's a sure fire way to end up with a hole in the block because when the rod quits knocking it will be because it is most likely laying outside the engine in the grass

Take the crank out & get it ground and get the rod resized. Have the rest of them checked too. Anything less will be a waste of money as it will come back & bite you.

Thats what I get for scanning--many yrs ago speed reading class taught you not to read every word--I jumped to the conclusion that he was talking about a noisy hyd pump..sorry bout that..I agree-I'd never run a knocking engine..On other hand my Dad's 2N pump has knocked for years and years and is still going today..

Pinball,Teddy52food has given you some good advice.
Take the crank to a quality machine shop and have it checked and reground undersized.Have them get you the undersized bearings for it.Also take all four rods to them and have them resized. If your selves and pistons are worn now is the time to replace them also with a new pistons and selves kit.Have the oil pump rebuilt also and you will have an engine to be proud of, and not have to do all of this again as you will have to do if you just path it up.

Part the tractor out.
Take the money you make and put it in a tractor fund.
Do a couple of them and you'll have enough to buy a 600, 800, 2000, 3000.

Part out a few more dozens and you can own some orange-of course you will be too old by then to operate it Tractor prices have gone to the point of just being plain 'Robbery" and they laugh all the way to the bank..

I seriously doubt the journal is fine, and your rod big bore end has lost it's crush. To make sure the repair lasts, you need to have the rod resized.

I do agree in the essences of your post . I have seen a lot of poor mans patch jobs that lasted a long time , but if you have to ask how to do it the the odds of doing it successfully are very slim .
