I have decided to selly my 2010 GMC Sierra..It iss spotless-not even one door ding--18,000 miles--5.3 engine, chrome wheels, grill, tow hitch, bed liner etc..Decided to call Nissan--I want a smaller truck..told them to start with that I cared nothing about bells and whistles...As the GAMR goes young fellow said I will talk to my manager and call u right back--he did...and would you believe they were so generous to say they could take my truck trade-in and I'd only owe them $14,500 more for the new No bells and whistles crew cab..(If I buy I really dont need crew cab) ---I was laughing so hard, I tried to hang up the phone and missed the phone cradle twice before I could get hung up...so sad how they steal from the average Joe or old person or lady who goes in to buy a vehicle...Didnt sleep much last night--still chuckling...

Tom. Your experience is not helping me much, my wife wants to trade our Toyota van with 80k miles for a new one or used with less miles,

I experience the same results you got from the dealership they want to sell you their vehicle and are willing to get your used one off the street as a favor to you,

I hate to trade vehicles, always feel like I get taken to the cleaners no matter how much homework I do on vehicles,

we recently bought a 2017 Ford F-150. we went to three different ford dealers. two gave us the same price on our 2012 Expedition as a trade in. one dealer was 3K less. I am not a fan of trading vehicles either but it is the easiest way to go and you don't have to deal with CL butt heads or have the vehicle sitting in front of your house until you sell. the trade in allowance was the same as what KBB said it was worth on a trade in.

did we make the best deal we could have? who knows. are we happy? yes and that is all that matters.

I never have figured out why people trade in low milage cars. I drive them until the wheels fall off and then fix them and drive them some more.

They don't call 'em "Stealerships" for nothin'!

Geiger, I'm with you. My 2000 Tacoma has 302k on it and my 2010 has 175k on it. I'll drive 'em till they fall apart.

I was fortunate, in that I was able to get the 2010 for $400 over dealer invoice, and I have a copy of that invoice. They asked me if I wanted to trade in the 2000 and I laughed at them. Seriously, wht would they give me for a 10 year old truck with 298k on it?

Tom,
I understand your surprise and disappointment over the 'value' of your 2010 Sierra. Checking the Kelly BB numbers, your dealer offer was in the so called book range. Doesn't make sense; but the huge discounts currently available from dealers on new truck inventory has really disrupted the used truck market. Current dealer offerings of 17% off the MSRP, even before any personal negotiation, have let the air out of the used market.

I might have an interest in your 2010 GMC; mine is a '99 with 235,000 miles. Send me an email([email protected]) with the details of your truck. Maybe we should talk.

Yep, some real shaky dealers out there but many good ones too. I am most fortunate to have friends that are in the business. Even then often the discounts like GM's "Friends and Family" or some Military discounts are hard to beat. The "Friends and Family" is for GM employees and retirees, they are allotted as many as 8 numbers per year. All you need is to know one of the eligible people and ask if they have a number for you. Most will and with it you get the lowest price. I know the other mfgrs. have similar programs but I do not know what they are called. So far as the blue books go I have printed them at home, taken it to the dealer and he immediately comes back with the same printout but showing a much lesser value, hard to win

On the edge of OT, but I believe one will see very low value in a lot of vehicles , now at about 2000 models and in the future years, newer, because already, some of the electronics modules necessary to make them operate are no longer available.
Tain't points & carbs anymore!

A young kid I work with bought a 1 year old Avalanche LTZ from a dealer for an insane amount of money. He then traded it in a year later for a Malibu. I asked him how much he had to pay on top of the trade in offer to pay off his truck. He looked at me with his head tilted like a confused dog. He said nothing. That they paid his truck off. Now I had the confused look on my face. I said there was no way the trade in offer paid his truck off. Then came the "well..." Yep, you guessed it... They rolled over almost 18K from his Avalanche into the Malibu, almost doubling the loan on the car.

The dealer pays around 15% under his invoice for the vehicle.

Never have liked this truck--too BIG--so high off the ground it is not
useful, doors weigh 300 lbs each-get on a slope then fight the door to open
it and get out...Very pretty red truck with good bit O chrome 5.3 engine
not the 4.8--anyway I want a smaller truck--might not find one..Had no
intentions of trading it in BUT going to go mess with the stealer some more
this weekend girl at work is interested in it si might be sold by
tomorrow...I hope..

If the shoe fits, wear it..most dealers are right in there with insurance
and banks-----very dishonest.....

Wish I could find a good used Toyota-I think they are hands down Better than Nissan with the same price..Here is the big favor they offered me today...2014 4 door Tacoma with 42000 miles-$28650..As usual, that is a New truck price...Oh, but it has a v-6 -- $1500 more for the 6 cyl..Wow whT deL/...MIGHT JUST GET TWO..

A dealership is a business just like any other. If you don't like the price they offer you, GO TO ANOTHER ONE.

And understand that they buy at WHOLESALE, not retail. They have to. If you want more money for your old vehicle, sell it yourself.

Amazes me how many people will pay 300% markup for furniture or to buy momma a new ring at the local jewelry store and not bat an eye. But if a dealer makes 1.5% on the sale of a new vehicle, he is a thief.

(quoted from post at 21:39:10 03/09/17) The dealer pays around 15% under his invoice for the vehicle.

That is completely not true.
So tell us what they do pay. Where do you get your information? How could the dealer take $8,000 off the list price of my $40,000 truck and still make money. I have told the dealer that I am not interested in how little they make, I want them to make a good profit. I am interested only in what I pay. They often make a big deal of trying to show you that they don't make money, but having owned and operated a distribution business for 25 years, I know that you don't stay in business without making a profit, let alone covering costs. They can't be in business without paying way under their invoice.

(quoted from post at 04:55:41 03/10/17) 1.5% ---lmbo

You can laugh, or you can be educated. Your call, makes no nevermind to me.

My guess is that the "15% below invoice" statement you mistakenly made is probably a misinterpretation of an old rule of thumb of invoice being roughly 15% of MSRP. No so nowadays and not always on different models. There is very little gross on new vehicles.

You speak as if you are in the new car business, but won't say. Is there not a huge range in how a vehicle is equipped, and also the type? It is my impression that profit is much higher on the options than the base vehicle and that trucks and SUVs and sporty cars have more profit than utilitarian sedans.

Sometimes, but not always. A lot of factors go into the selling price of a new vehicle such as options versus desirability, how long the dealer has had it on his lot, is the end of a quarter, is it stale inventory, is it a hard vehicle to get ahold of, competition etc.

Remember that new vehicles are not the only thing a dealership sells. They also sell used vehicles, parts and service, auto body repairs (some dealers) and F and I.

I bought my wife a new car in September 2015. I let the dealer have about $1000 profit on the $30,000 car. However, the $1000 was before his advertising expenses, lot space or interest paid while the car sat on his lot for year.

I own a SMALL business and overhead will eat you lunch . I always wondered how a fast food place can buy a million dollar lot , build a new building , and sell a $5 burger to make a real profit .

Car dealers or fast food , people still choose to spend their money there so it is not really price gouging if you have a choice . It is a fine line between profit and failure with most any business , which is hard to see from the outside .

I spotted a truck that I wanted on a used car lot . The salesman told me $7K . I thanked him for his time and started walking off . He hit me with " I think the boss would take $6K " . I said no thanks and kept walking . He was down to $4500 buy the time I drove off . It was a $3k truck .

I would bet with just a phone call the price would start high . I don't know anyone that would turn down a raise if their boss offered to double their pay . If you work on commission that's where you are at .

That is exactly right. If you want the worst price for your trade, call a dealer instead if bringing it in. They don't know if you're a serious buyer or a tire kicker wasting their time. They also don't know if your truck really is "like new" like you say or if it has the whole passsnger's side knocked in. You will not get a good price on the phone.

I have bought two used cars and a used 35' motor home on EBAY in the last 10 years. Still driving them. The Range Rover was from a dealer in Houston, and I still got a great deal. It was worth the three hour drive. The motor home we bought was 900 miles away, but we enjoyed the trip to pick it up. My wife followed me back in the Rover. The car was found just 30 miles away from home.

When it's time to buy another I'm returning to EBAY. You have to be careful and do a lot of homework, but in our case we made great deals. We sold the motorhome for 10K more than we paid for it a year later.

That's ok the whole car dealership business model is going to bo gone soon. of course, soon afterward all cars will be driverless and nobody will likely need to buy one.

This isn't the dealer fault really, they still have to resell that truck and make a profit. If you compare their service rate with what they pay a mechanic you'll get an idea of the markup they need to operate

(quoted from post at 23:13:18 03/10/17) They will see it tomorrow

I get a laugh out of hearing a local car sales on the radio .

"We want your car no matter how much you owe . We will pay off your car if we make a deal [/color:7b5d63dd0c]"

"Dent , Damaged . Doesn't run ? Pull it in - Drag it in , and we will give you 120% of Kelley Blue book trade in valve , if you buy a new car or truck[/color:7b5d63dd0c] "

And my favorite , made me think of Steve Martin pointing out which prize you could win at the fair . "Not this shelf or this shelf " " All of these in this little area "

$6000.00 off [b:7b5d63dd0c]EVERY[/b:7b5d63dd0c] select [/color:7b5d63dd0c]new truck in stock "

yep-its just a game for them and there is a sucker born every minute..They
don't have to even consider treating folks right-most folks just want to
know what the monthly payment will be --- and they fall for it --and the
rip off artist knows a sucker will soon come along...
