I am trying to get a Ford 501 sickle mower into operation with my 8N. I have installed a new Pitman arm and mowed grass for about 30 minutes when the arm came loose from the knife head ball. I reattached and again it came loose. The latch mechanism doesn't seem to be under any tension when closed. I may have created the problem myself as the new Pitman arm came with a hole in the end slightly smaller than 3/4" and the spring would not go in. I enlarged the hole with a sandpaper-wrapped dowel in my drill so that the tongue spring would seat to the bottom of the hole. Should I have left it alone to have some tension when the Pitman lever closes? Would it be safe to add some other type of clamp or other mechanism to keep the arm attached to the ball or does the design act as a sort of weak link to break the connection if the blade is jammed?
