bought this 8n with a motor noise. its really more of a loud ticking noise than a knock. it only carrys 20 lbs of oil pressure so I plan on dropping the pan to check the bearings. it sort of sounds like the old cars when a lifter was stuck. didn't know if these would do that or not. motor runs very well. any thoughts thanks norm

Pinball,Check for a exhaust leak between the manifold and the block, particularly around #4 port.I've seen a lot of them leak there and it will sound like a engine ticking noise. Check with a 2'-3' length of garden hose ect held up up your ear and move the other end around the manifold while running.

20lbs of pressure on one of these is bragging rights. Don't know about the ticking noise but make sure it's not something like an exhaust leak causing the noise, common areas are the clamp and number 4 exhaust port on the manifold. Does your pressure stay at twenty when warmed up? If so the oil pressure is fine.

As said, 20 lbs of oil pressure is good. Dropping the oil pan is a bit of a project.

How about valve adjustments. While there are no pushrods or rocker arms, you still have lifters and valve adjustments.

According to one of Fords original old handbooks written in the era of the side mount distributor if at 1500 rpm you get 20-25 pounds you are in good shape.

picked up the tractor this morning. noticed when he reved it up to load it on the trailer it sounded a lot different. That's when I got thinking maybe theres some thing else causing that noise. from what I can see the manifold looks good but I will investigate it closer Tuesday. suppose to rain anyway so good day to work in the barn. maybe ill get lucky and wont have to pull the pan as it is a job to get it off. this guy had this tractor for 30 years on his goat farm. lights even work, has the original glass jar and glove compartment box. 850 cranking amp 5 year battery 2015 in it. has an older alternator but don't think it works. 80 percent rubber. its got a lot of things going for it if I'm can just find out the ticking noise. thanks norm

My 8N suddenly developed a very distinct ticking noise like you are describing. When I carefully held my fingers around number four exhaust, I could actually feel the leaking pulsing air.

You may not be able to feel it like I did but my vote is still on an exhaust leak. When I removed the manifold, it was eroded around number four. I didn't mess around trying to repair it since they are cheap enough. I just put a new one on and it fixed the problem.

My block was not eroded around number four but I would not run your tractor with that leak. Running it with it leaking can cause your block face to start eroding, then you really have problems.

i'll add my name to the list of people with a ticking sound from a manifold leak behind #4. i won't swear to it, but it seems to me the visual evidence wasn't obvious until i removed the manifold.

I didn't see any visual evidence either. You can't tell if a manifold is good just by looking at it. Of course, I mean when it's still on the tractor.
