8n starter drive question

Looking for direction... having purchased my first 8n last fall, I'm learning to fix and maintain it on my own. It was purchased to brush hog the farm and general "make my grandpa feel young and useful again"! Went to start it and had trouble turning it over, then the starter just whined and no motion at all. Removed the starter and noticed the flywheel on the drive has been sheared. I see this site sells drives and I want to be sure it will fit with my tractor. Hard to read the numbers but I think it's. 1949. I just really need someone to say "yup that drive will work when u putnit back in the tractor". Thanks.

this is the drive I'm asking about that's for sale from yesterdays tractors. A $20 part sure seems better than a $100 starter...

You got it, they work real good, shipping makes it a bit more but they are the ones I am running on my two 8ns. The pin that hholds them on is a bit tricky, but you can do it.

Yep, that's the starter drive, aka Bendix, that you need.

While you are ordering parts, you should get the manuals; see tip # 39.

When you get the old Bendix off, check the shaft for any movement. If it has any, it's time for a rebuild.

Clean all the dust & grease off the shaft before you install the new Bendix. The shaft needs to be clean & dry.

For a better ground, polish the mating area between the bell housing & the block.

Yes, it will work on your tractor. One work of warning - Don't mess with the new one by turning the gear etc. when you get it. It will 'lock' in the extended position, then you will have a hard time getting it to retract (it works on centrifugal force when it turns on the motor shaft). Just put it on the starter and install it. It will work.

By movement, do u mean side to side or in/out? There's no movement side to side but about a mm play in/out. Thanks for the advice on the ground I'll be sure to do that. And manual isnin the shopping cart! Thanks for replies!

Yes I saw that warning on a YouTube video! Lol. My grandparents think I can do anything and I tell them Google and YouTube makes it look that way ;)

jen369,Welcome to the N forum ,That is a nice lookin 8N and Gramps looks like he is happy setting on that seat with that big E to E smile. That starter drive, http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/5211350C_Starter-Drive_1757.htm,is the new improved design starter drive and works much better than the old original type that you have.Remember try not to extend it out when you install it to make the installation easier.

As Den said, you will be glad u changed to the new style drive..One of the
best things I did to my 2N..
