I bought my first tractor on Tuesday. Still trying to figure out the year. Lots of rust and paint in the way. It has a 12 volt battery on it so I'm figuring it has been converted. My question is....is there two different size battery boxes depending on whether it is 6v or 12v? I need to purchase a new one to start as the one on the tractor is very bad shape. Battery ( 12v ) is basically hanging off the edge of the box. Thank you.

" It has a 12 volt battery on it so I'm figuring it has been converted. "

Probably.

But you wouldn't be the first guy to buy a 6 volt 8N with a 12 volt battery in it.

Does it have an alternator or a generator?

If it has an alternator and a 12v battery, I'd say the chances are 99.9 out of 100 that it's a 12 volt conversion.

But, if it has a generator, you best check it out.

Your next purchase should be a set of manuals; see tip # 39 for some suggestions.

(quoted from post at 13:07:46 02/26/17) If you prefer side terminals (I do), then a Group 75 is a nice fit.

Why would you prefer side terminals when easy access to the battery is from the top?

I just purchased a MF202 and the previous owner put a side terminal battery in it. I can't even get at the terminals unless I lift the battery out of it. Luckily the cables are long enough to permit this. When I have to replace that battery I will get a top terminal battery.

I only know of one size of battery box.
They really get rusted badly when a battery leaks or explodes.
They are available aftermarket, though not cheap.

The only reason side terminal batteries still exist is that they need the inventor to die before discontinuing them, so as not to severely embarrass the pore fellow.

I thought they worked better with Dex-cool leaks.
Drips off instead of gumming up as badly that way. ;)

i like the way cables fasten to a sidepost battery. i just wish they used that same system on the top instead.

not a big fan of trying to jump one unless the vehicle itself has separate places to do it.

Hey When i got my NAA the battery box was shot and the battery was held in with a rubber strap. I got an aftermarket box got it to fit i will say I
needed to teak it a little . Then I took my new after market hold down bracket went to Napa and got one to fit just make sure the terminals are
on the right side. The battery was a little short and sat low in the box . I took a piece of wood the thickness I need to get it high enough to clear
the box and painted that red . You don't even see if . I also had to grind some of the top bracket because the metal was a little to close to the
terminal . I also got some new hold down bolts . So far so good .
