hydraulic lift goes up but wont come down

Wow, this post is just like hdltch post.. Raw question with absolutely no info as to what machine it is...

Remove the inspection plate with the
dipstick. Reach in and push the control rod
to the rear. If the arms drop, you found the
problem: a dirty pump.

Post back with results. My guess is that
dropping the pump and cleaning it is in your
future.

A few years ago, someone posted about a points problem. Right out of the box, he got a reply that said pull the distributor, replace the points, the distributor only goes back one way, yada yada.

Yea, it was a sidemount......
 
It will drop when I tap on the hydraulic pump valve. I lift it again and it works fine far a couple of times then it sticks again. I guess I need to drop the pump and clean it? What do I clean out and what do I look for?
 
If it's a 9N the dipstick is up on top of the tranny by the starter button. I don't know what year they moved it down to the inspection cover.
