On the outside chance it's mechanical try cleaning ball/wheels.

As cheap as they are I wouln't waste a lot of time on one that wasn't working.

explain "hold down button"

what button? power button?

Makes a difference about which button you are having to hold, as to what the problem might be.

Having to hold down a power button indicates a bad latching switch, or latching circuit.. not a dirty ball.. etc. If it's another button.. we need more explanation.. hold down to do what?

I have a wireless optical mouse and matching wireless keyboard that work well. The set was only like $20. Just buy a new set.

By the way, they're made by Logitech.

i love logitech - or at least, i used to. then i bought a wireless mini mouse of theirs, and it was garbage. i didn't know if i had a bad one, or if they were all bad. took it back to the store, the woman in returns said no, i have one of those too, works great. i said ok, let's swap it then, this one i got must be a lemon. got the new one home, was a rerun of the first. i called logitech and was in for a rude surprise. their return policy, as the less than cordial woman on the phone explained, would require me to take a picture of my existing mouse immersed in water before they would send me a replacement.

i have been in the computer business for 30+ years, and a BIG factor in deciding who to do business with has been service and support. i stopped buying dells for customers when dell started looking for any excuse to not help u when u called for support. never bought another dell since.

i'll give logitech another chance, but they are no longer in the group of manufacturers who i endorse without hesitation.

no ball wireless. have to keep left clicker down or release slowly to get any action. double clicking is a no go.

Those mice have micro contact switches for each button, and usually an optical encoder scroll wheel.

You can check those micro switches with an ohm meter with mouse off and apart.

Let it go where all dead mice go. They are cheap cheap cheap.

No use hassling with it.
