Grew up in that part of PA. In the 60s and 70s they actually served fastnachts in our public school cafeteria on Fastnacht Day. Real ones are square or rectangular with a knife slit (not a round hole) in the center, and involve lard (but not Coca-Cola in the recipe, that's a recent abomination).
