Boil Tank or New

I have tractor that has set up for about 3 years. I am going to split it in the near future and put a new block to it. The tank is relatively new, but I did not drain the tank when I parked it years ago. I assume I have a varnish residue in the bottom. Is it worth boiling the tank out, or just bite the bullet and get a new one? Assume the old tank is structurally fine.

G6,If it is just varnish and crud in the bottom of your tank, just get some lacquer thinner pour it in and let it soak about 3 days. That should clean it out, repeat if needed.

If the gas is only 3 years old, I'd just drain the old gas and put fresh in it and run it. You might need starting fluid to get it going, but flowing gas will clean the carb well enough. I had an 8N setting here for more than 5 years with stinky gas in the tank. After draining and filling with about 2 gallons of fresh, it smoked and stinked when started on carb clean juice, but cleaned itself up nicely. Of course if this doesn't work for you, you can follow with something more drastic with the tank.

I just think you will be OK without a lot of effort.

I agree with Paul, drain and add fresh. 3 years is not that long.

I could be wrong , but I have always felt that name brand premium gas has a good detergent additive that would help with an old dirty tank .

Use a flashlight and look in to see if it's rusty. If it's clean, I would drain and fill and the carb too. If there is anything but surface rust, I would replace the tank.
