Update on the 8N parts tractor

Had a little time to get it in the shop this evening.
It had one of those weird aftermarket manifolds on
it that the studs won't reach so it was bolted on.
The rear two bolts were 3/8, the next was 1/2,
the front one 5/16. This is where the crack and the leak were.
It appears that the second hole back was drilled and tapped.
It did not leak.
The front one looks like it has a slim-sert JB welded in.
Best I can tell the crack didn't leak but the bolt did.
The front one could probably be drilled out and tapped.

I'm pretty sure the engine is stuck, but not sure how badly.
Looking through the spark plug holes I see some shiny new
valves. Like, never ran, new. But only half of them.
Both on one cylinder, one each on two other cylinders.

I'm not going to fix the block, I have enough projects at the moment.
If anyone close enough to pick it up has any interest in the
engine whole or otherwise make me an offer. Email should be open.

The wiring looks like fun too! Not to mention the NAA floorboard.
That's a brick in the toolbox and it's falling out on its own.

I'm not at all mad though. It was advertised as having a bad
engine and purchased with that understanding.
I was after some of the other parts.

Brick is for beaning gophers while on the move. The added height from the tractor seat really helps with gopher control.

Just another N dies of abuse and neglect. I bet a lot of people used bolts on
the exhaust man. I can see where it happens if ya dont know the reason for a
studs.

LOL if you stomped it very hard you could bean one for sure!

It's interesting what parts have been changed on this tractor.
Fuel line is new but there was no gas in the tank. Not even
fumes. Doesn't smell like gas or turpentine. No smell at all.
I plan to get the inspection camera out tomorrow and take a
good look inside the tank to see what it looks like.

Some of the floorboard brackets are newer.
Radius rods, bolster, center front axle, axle pin, bushing and
washers have all been more recently replaced. Eclectic mix.

Plus the previously mentioned new valves, some new bolts
in the head, new bolts between the engine and transmission.
As if someone has been "fixing" it off and on for years.

L.B, I don't know if you've ever seen one of these manifolds.
The original studs would not work with them.

Longer studs could be used, but most people simply used bolts
as opposed to buying 3 inch long studs. Right or wrong.

I don't believe they would work on a 9N/2N because they stick
out too far for the throttle linkage to clear on those tractors.

Here's some pics to compare the different styles.

I bet that aftermarket manifold is a pain to keep gaskets sealed.

Makes you wonder if someone got your parts tractor thinking it'd be a fun "restoration" project and then abandoned it after they realized they were in over their head.

Unbelievable! Look at that wiring monstrosity too! Some folks should not be allowed to pick up a wrench. Hackmasters I call them. Guys I use to work with learned fast never to ask me to borrow a tool unless they intended to use it properly. If someone asked to borrow a screwdriver or wrench, I would ask what for. I got tired of getting back a chewed up screwdriver because it was used as chisel or a crescent wrench because it was used as hammer. My daddy taught me right. When I would hire new set up men in the machine shops I worked in, first thing I did was confiscate their hammers too. There are those who get it, those who don't, and those who never will. I have no tolerance for the intellectually challenged.

Someone put a lot of time and money into that tractor. Do you think you bought it from the fella who did the work?

I don't think so Colin. I'm tempted to ask him.
He was a younger guy, but didn't misrepresent a single thing.
I get the feeling maybe it belonged to a relative and he
inherited it or something along those lines.

I sent him a quick text Colin. No, he didn't do the work.
He didn't say who did or when, but it wasn't him.
