OT: 1987 Lincoln Weldanpower Surge issues

I posted this in tool talk, but I wanted to cast a wider net.

I have a Lincoln Weldanpower from about 1987. It has a Briggs 16hp single cylinder motor on it and after about an hour of running, it begins to surge. We thought it a fuel issue, but that has been ruled out. It was switched from points to EI at some point. Would a failing EI cause a surge issue after about an hour of run time while under intermittent load? What other electrical things can we check? Would the ignition switch go bad in this manner?

Thanks

BTW, what difference does a sparkplug with a resistor or without make on this age/type of machine. The manual calls for either, but doesn't offer a preference.

My Miller has an 18hp Onan so it may not even be close , but I have been told to look for a vacuum leak on an intake gasket . It does OK cold but starts surging when it gets warmer .

There may be a screw under the float bowl on that carb
if so, warm it up and turn it in till it stumbles
and then out til it smoothes out then out more and when it roughens up then back in til it smoothes out again
That should stop the surge............. 8)
