Ford gray paint

When I purchased my 53 Jubilee in 2007 it was painted with what looks like a meduim gray and not the brownish gray like the Van Sickle meduim gray. I did look at some past posts about Ford paint, I don't know that much about the tactor paint but I do like the meduim gray color other than what is the authentic brownish gray,so my questions is: Does anyone have any ideas of paint brands and where I could locate this (standard?) meduim gray? I just replaced my gas tank and have the front metal off but could post a photo of a rear fender if that would help. Thanks,
Ron

I thought the grey that came with my Jubilee looked right, so I unbolted the narrow hood from it's hinges and took it to a place that deals in Valspar Urethane paint. They scanned my paint and the computer immediately reported" "Ford Grey". So I bought Valspar Ford Grey and did my wheels and lower end of my front grille. Perfect match as far as I can tell even though the new paint hasn't had time to fade.

Thanks. Very nice Jubilee you have there. your paint job is very good. Is that a light gray? I'm trying to attach a photo to
show color of mine....hoping to not have to repaint the gray.

I think there are about 4 or 5 "Ford Grays".
There is the darker, battleship gray used on the 9/2Ns.
Then there was the kind of olive gray used on the 8Ns - and NAAs.
Next came a lighter, neutral gray used on the Hundred Series and the 01 Series.
Then came the 4 cylinder Thousand Series which used a bit lighter gray to go along with the new Ford Blue.
Lastly, there is the gray which is almost white which was used on the 3 cylinder Thousand Series.
It's never easy is it :)

....and my photo is telling....am I the only one around that has a messy shop? Well it is one item on my someday list.

Thanks, I bought a couple of van sickle rattle cans one with the "olive gray", one with light gray and neither matched what on my tractor. I've attached a photo in reply to T. Tall.

The paint on your fender looks like the Ford Dark Gray or
Ferguson Gray sold at TSC. Battleship Gray, etc. Might try that.

Another thought, Rustoleum has a gray about that shade too.
I mixed it with Rustoleum white to make the lighter gray that
I painted this 8N with a few years ago.

i wish mine were painted the battleship gray. instead i've got a redbelly 2N, with a gray that doesn't look gray - at least not to my slightly colorblind eyes.

i've been pretty ambitious in the basement this winter. as a result, for the first time in years, most of my workbench is actually visible.

the pole barn still looks like a tornado came thru and blew all the debris from the area into it

Hey! It could be worse! My 2N is a bluebelly -- where it's not rust-colored.

Thanks! The grey on your fender looks right and like my "Medium Gray" as I think Royse called it on another thread.
I totally like the shade and am not keen on lighter grey's I've seen.

If that nice grey fender of yours was mine, I sure wouldn't want to repaint it either, I'd just paint the rest of the sheet metal to match. Then just get out your artist brushes and paint the Ford script red. If you had that fender paint scanned according to Valspar standards at least, it would probably come up "Ford Grey" like mine did. It looks right. Lots of brown or green in it . . . I can't remember which.

Here are the Valspar numbers for the Grey I used:
VALSPAR

852 SS Polyurethane (A)

852-145056 NF

TERRAIN

2013 FORD USA (VA-7290)

RED PAINT
I've been playing around with IHC reds cause I'm not crazy about the orangy Jubilee red. First I did my front bumper but it came out too magenta bordering on pinkish. So then I discovered that there is an OLDER Valspar IHC red formulation which was what I was after so I tried it on my three point parts.

RC,

I thought you might get around to reds so that's why I'm ramblin' on about my limited use of them.

This one, NEW HOLLAND RED turned out way "redder" and brighter than the color chip on Valspar's web site tractor colors
and I really like it.
So now I can't make up my mind for future red application whether to go with the old IHC Red formulation or this New Holland Red.

I kinda like that NH red T, might give that a try myself.
Can't remember for sure, but I think I used Farmall red
on that particular 8N I posted. Could have been Rustoleum.
One of them I did in 100% Rustoleum. Might be this one.
The Ford red definitely has a more orange-ish tint to it.

My shop and garage and sheds are a maze of paths in and among and around the accumulation of everything. Much of the exercise I get is climbing over things to get to other things. I desperately need to clean up, clean out and get organized. Maybe in a dream world....

I buried the front tires on my 3000 trying to cross a small creek deep in the woods as I was working on the fence line . I had a small pig trail I could drive down and the cows were busting through the fence daily . The top of the front tires were sticking above the mud maybe 3" - 4 " and the bumper was plowing mud on the other side . I had crossed it a few times that day with just a little spinning but had goosed it through . It wasn't but 8 - 10" deep before I got stuck .

We didn't feel we could get another tractor back that deep in the woods since they were all bigger and heavier . The 3000 has scalloped rear centers with loop rims . My neighbor came over with some long chains and we ran the chain through the rim hooking to itself and pulled tight to a tree 30' away . Low gear in reverse and 2/3rds throttle and it pulled the tractor back about 3 feet. We rehooked the chain a few more times but it pulled out smoothly . Just don't run the chain through where the valve stem sticks out or you will have bigger problems he told me .

I will be swapping my 8N hat rims for scalloped centers and Loops sometime this year .

You can also adjust the tires in and out without taking the
centers off with the scalloped centers. Unbolt the outer rim,
turn the center until the loops clear, move the loops through
the scallops, turn the centers to align the holes again and put
the bolts back in. Not original on an N, but handy just the same.

Centers from a Ferguson 20/30 were made that way and fit fine.
That's what the centers on this tractor came off of.
Original Ferguson outer rims used different bolts than Ford.

I'd love to save all the old hat rims for the trailer queens.
Arkansas is a long way for shipping though! :)

That looks like the "light gray" from TSC.
Lighter colors are not as prone to fading as darker ones.
Especially if you used the recommended hardener, etc.
Run it for a while. You might be pleasantly surprised! :)

Well, a big thanks to all of you for your comments so now I have some ideas to go with. also good to know I'm not alone on this planet with a messy shop/barn. Afraid if I clean it up I won't be able to find anything....or find my way around in the barn....good excuse?? Na, I might give it a try someday.

FORD N-Series paint numbers are: 9N & 2N used M2888 Dark Gray Enamel with both sheet metal and cast parts painted the same; 8N & NAA used Ford Medium Grey M-13243 on sheet metal and M-2822 Vermillion (Red) Enamel on cast parts. The TISCO IH-TP110 is almost a dead match for the original Ford Vermillion Red. Has been confirmed by a few experts, one being the late great Mr. Harold Brock. TISCO's other FORD labeled red paints are just too orangey. They do offer a new one Ford Vermillion Red but it carries the M-2822 part number so I suspect it is the same as their older plain 'Ford Red'. The TISCO TP-240 Ford Medium Grey is a bit more olive shade than original but looks very good. There are a few other very good paints that look good but expect to pay big $$$ for the good stuff. TISCO paint is supplied by The Van Sickle Paint Co. and is an alkyd enamel. Here's my early 8N and Dearborn Plow, restored in 2003, all painted with the TISCO paints as listed above. When I get ready to do another engine rebuild (this is my working and show tractor) I will get a better brand of paint to do it in. John Smith shows what he used on his restorations -www.8nford.com . There is also a comprehensive list of paints on the N-BOARD on the other Ford Tractor site...

Your paint looks close to what I have now. Today , I did find some rattle can Rustoleum called "smoke Gray" that is very close. It will get me by for some touch ups but I also plan to repaint later.

Thanks

Very nice tractor there. I have two 14 dearborn plows on mine but not as nice as your...mine needs paint.
