Someone had ask how I started a tractor using a flat belt pulley. With the help of my wife I posted my first youtube video. Don't laugh It's my first attempt at this.

Nice, and it doesn't take a second person.... getting the belt SET UP isn't as easy as a tow chain. That'll work for ANY other tractor with a flat belt.... even a JD. Good job!!

Yea, I know that although some may not. I moved the pulley to the other side to get the rotation right. I would twist the belt if running for long time cause the way it was the pulley is in line with the muffler pipe and that wouldn't be good.

I have a John Deere LUC two cylinder engine that had sat for many years outside and was stuck etc. I took the head off and freed it up and a lot of other stuff. It is a hand started engine with hand crank. I connected my B John Deere flat belt to the LUC flat belt and started the B and got the belts running straight and then engaged the B PTO and turned the LUC engine to sort of loosen up things. It started with a big smoke. I disengaged the LUC belt pulley and then the B and it continued to run. Let it run for about 2 hours till the rings came unstuck and it stopped smoking.
I still use the LUC to power my Meadows grist mill that I sometimes take to antique tractor shows etc.
Not as much fun since my grandson's got married that used to help me.
Time marches on.

That's how some of the farmers here started there irrigation engines. Knew a guy that had a 43 JD A. First he had to crank the A to start the old MM engine.

Kirk,

When you said, "moved the pulley to the other side" do you mean that the bolt on PTO pulley assembly can be flipped 180 and bolted on that way as well? I have one but I haven't used it yet.

Thanks and great video,
Terry

Nice job, Kirk, and very resourceful.

Nice collection, too. Looks like you have lots of projects.

Below is a link to an even more redneck resourceful way to start your tractor, and all you need is a tow strap and a Honda.

Of course, you might need to remove the ORC from your N.

Thanks Dean & Kirk,

I always wondered about the half twist and thought it was just to keep the belt from walking off the pulleys. :D
