9N Governor

Hey N-Pros,

New to the forum and I could use some advice.

I have what seems to be an intermittent governor issue. Most times, if I let out the clutch slowly, the revs stay fairly constant and off we go. Other times, it doesn't matter how slowly I let it out (1st gear) and it will want to stall. Further, it happens more often in 1st than reverse....shouldn't matter, right? When it's "acting up", I can't use 3rd even if I'm pointed downhill.

Last summer, we installed the governor rebuild kit from YT. 'Definitely needed since the old balls were flat spotted pretty badly. I followed the instructions at the time.

I have the original manual. It says that the governor needs little maintenance and is lubricated internally. Wondering if mine's "special". There's a 90 degree nipple on the back of the governor body similar to where the fuel line enters the carb. A small threaded plug caps it off. I've squirted a few drops of 5W-30 in there and it's helped....intermittently.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

What year is your 9N? The early 9Ns used a cast iron body governor. They did not come with an oil line for lube -that was added a bit later BUT Ford did issue a special service manual on the governor and offered a kit to add an oil line to pre-existing models without the lube line. It sounds lie you have an original 9N Operator or Service manual. They were prior to the oil line change. If you want to get a free download copy of that manual, ya gotta go to the other Ford Tractor web site -email me for directions as they won't let me post it here...

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your response. I don't see an oil line. I've attempted to post a pick of the 90 degree nipple on the governor. I'll look into the oil line upgrade.
