49 8n for sale what would be a fair offer

I already have a 48 8n neighbor has a 49 he wants to sell. Asking $1000. Did a visual inspection last weekend. The manifold is cracked and the hydraulics are leaking. He told me that it runs but battery is not charging. It does have a 12 volt conversion. It has 16 inch tires in front. Decent condition. Rear tires are good also. Also the starter button has been disconneted and a key start has been rigged up.
Should I offer $700 or am I buying a yard orniment? Asking the 8n experts what else to look for. Thanks for your input.
 

the manifold is easy to replace. u say he says it runs, but i'd want to see that with my own ears ;) , not to mention take it for a test drive.

charging system not working is not a huge deal, should be easy to fix once diagnosed.

where are the hydraulics leaking? that info will help the gurus to let u know what it's going to take to deal with it.
 
1,000 dollars is fair for a running good oil pressure front distributor 8N with decent tires. As in your description most 8N's for 1,000 dollars will need some attention requiring some money. It's pretty tough to get an 8N to price above 2,000 dollars in its work clothes. Even side distributor 8N's by themselves not freshened up go around the 1,750 mark. All this unlike 25 years ago where you could put a beat up '48 8N in the Saturday classifieds for 3,500 dollars and have six guys show up at 9:30 in the morning to fight over it.
 
I thought the manifold would be an easy repair. Are the aftermarket ones any good? I was going to replace the exhaust while i had it apart.
 
The quality is not great but it is not like you will need to replace it year after year. I was not alive during the 1940's or 1950's but I have had guys tell me that the OEM manifolds did not last all that long if the tractor was used quite a bit versus running 10 hours per year mowing a small lot and plowing out the driveway.
 
You have an 8N already and I don't know why anyone would need two of them.
If you can get it for $500 and part it out then do it. Put a few bucks in your tractor account. If you can't then I would pass.
If you're looking for another tractor to fix up and use or tinker with then look for a Hundred or Thousand Series. Learn, grow, adapt, increase, modernize.
 
A running 8N even if it needs a bunch of work will fetch more than 500 dollars. I don't know that 600 bucks would buy a non-runner even if it were a fair price for what was there.

N series tractors up in my area are crazy high. Take a look at the Mpls, MN craigslist. Many N series sellers are asking 2500-3000 a nd more for tractors that are not very good. People trying to get 800 for a non runner with bad tires.

Here, a running 8N with good tires would bring $1000 pretty easy.
Even if it did need some work. They are popular.

On the other hand, I bought a running 3000 for less.
Has power steering, remote hydraulics, 8 spd trans, live PTO.
The engine needs to be rebuilt. Hopefully it won't need too much.

I won't get to it until after my next 8N project which I will start
as soon as it warms up a bit. Cold here in Michigan this time of
year and I don't like to leave my vehicles outside so they take
up my shop space! Joan thinks hers should be in there too.
Otherwise I'd at least have one bay open... ;)

Third week of June is my local tractor show.
If I don't have the 8N done by then, this may be the
first year I don't have a Ford fixed up to take. :shock:
I guess I could take some of the workers to set next
to the "pretty" Farmalls and the others.

I'm in Michigan too and a decent running 8N with NO major issues goes for $1800 on average. Ten years ago the market was in more demand for Ford tractors and $2500 plus was the norm. Most 12 volt convulsions are done improperly and thus create more problems; ergo: "the starter button has been disconnected" and "battery not charging". How does one crack the manifold? Where exactly do the hydraulics leak? There isn't much difference between a '48 and a '49 8N so since you already have one, like suggested, if ya gotta just have another Ford Tractor, save your $$$ and get a Hundred Series (600/800/900) or a Thousand Series (2000/3000/4000) and leave this one for someone else to get and possibly make a restoration project out of it unless you are collecting model years and have to have it. If so, how much is still original? Is the block cracked and/or welded? Does the owner still have the original generator and voltage regulator to go with it? Original lights? Original Gauges? Toolbox? Hat rims? Bumper? Clevis bracket? Radiator? Grille? There's so many parts I look at when scrutinizing a tractor's worth. Just my 2? worth...

Being a neighbor makes it a sticky proposition. It is far more important for you both to feel good than for you to get a super deal. I would try to work out a contingency sort of deal where he gets a good fair price if it starts with just a good battery and a lower one if an attempt to start or running reveals significant problems.
