NOVI Governor

I am in the process of rebuilding my brother in laws late 51 8n that I got in baskets. Went through everything before I put it together and did all the needed repairs. It is running and need to get the governor and linkage adjusted. can not find the hand throttle rod or quandrant so I ordered them. It has a novi governor on it and I am not familiar with it. I cannot find any information on it although it looks ok now that I have it apart. Has anyone worked on them or are familiar with this governor. The only stampings on the governor says NOVI Governor. I stopped at my local ford tractor dealer and nothing in the parts books. Looking for help thanks.

Novi is on casting of all N govs that I have seen, however, the internals are of two different designs, most balls/disk, but a few flyweights.

It looks like a standard ford 8n governor from the outside. both control arms and spring are the same as my other ford 8n. The only difference I see is the standard ford has 4 balls and the bracket that holds them and the race cup and this novi has two counterweights that control the governor speed through centrifical force. All the throttle mechanisms are the same and I would hope adjusted the same but really don't know. I am not sure how to post a picture.

I have a couple of those, Several years ago one of mine was posted on the forum. It could be a repair assembly for a worn housing etc. Is your housing worn? I have never seen any data on that conversion but that too is not unusual. If it works use it!

No the housing looks fine. I don't see any grooves on the inside of the housing. There was a lot of play with outer arm that fits on housing and I shimmed it and it feels good now with no play. I hope that is my problem. I have parts ordered and hope to get it running this weekend. I hope the linkage is adjusted the same as a regular 8n. Will post when I know.

Cabinkiotio Does your governor have 3 arms on it,if so it is a 9N-2N Novi. The 8N governor has 2 arms on it.Maybe the engine has been swapped to a 9N or 2N engine.Have you checked the SN on it to see if it is a 8N engine?Ford used a lot of governors from Novi as one of their vendors. The Novi is preferred by many as a better governor.

Cabinkiotio,I didn't know that Novi made any governors for the 8Ns,but doing some research I found a pic of 2 arm 8N 2 flyweight one. Is this like yours.

That is the photo of mine that I mentioned below. BTW, the 8N flyball governors were Novi's.

As said previously, all the 8N ball type governors were NOVI. Your internals have been replaced with an aftermarket flyweight conversion like the one pictured. The flyweight conversion works well, but the important part for those is the governor spring. Since the flyweights are lighter than the Novi 4 ball type, you must use the lighter spring that has the correct rate to the flyweights. The governor pictured will not work as it has the original spring on it. Here's a picture of an original governor spring and the lighter flyweight type spring. With the right spring they work well.

It seems like the flyweight conversion would be a much sought after upgrade. No need to rebuild the governor or replace a worn casing. Did they not catch on? Were there service issues?

I used to have a flyweight conversion on my old 9N. Are they still available? To me it was a great improvement since I had a Wagner loader on the old 9N.
Wish I had kept it when I sold the 9N.

I haven't seen the flyweight type sold new since the '80's or '90's. Lots of used ones still around. They were no better or worse than the original ball type, just different. It was a suitable replacement, not necessarily an upgrade.

Dean that is exactly the governor I am talking about all the internals look ok, One post talked about changing the spring but not sure what to replace it with. I sure would like to know that.

John thank you for the information on the spring replacement do you know were I can purchase one before I install the governor back on the tractor

No idea where you'd find one. It needs to be the correct length and spring rate to balance out the flyweights. You'd have to find someone who has an extra original one for sale or an original one from which they could give you accurate measurements of the wire diameter, number of coils, spring outside diameter and length, and then contact spring suppliers and hope it's a stock item.
