Small engine Tach

I need to sync the carbs on my Kawasaki Prairie 650, the manual says to set the idle to 1100 rpms before doing this. I have an engine analyzer but it is for 4,6 or cylinders so I'll need something that will work on just two cylinders. Any thoughts or recommendations an a tool that will work for this? Any way I can moogi foogi this analyzer to work on a 2 cylinder? Cost is somewhat a factor as I can't think of anything else I would ever use this on. Thanks

I know on the dwell meter is says for a 4 cyl to double the readings of the 8 cyl mode . They will count the number of times the points get grounded so try it on 4 cyl and double your results to see if that works before buying anything .

I have used those small tach / hour meters for small engines . They read one spark plug wire so the number of cylinders does not matter , only 2 cycle or 4 stroke ( switch )

I ASSUME the little green alligator clip is the speed pickup connection?

Is there a way to safely connect that to the primary side of the (likely) electronic ignition on your quad?

ASSUMING you can trigger it from the ignition for just one of the cylinders, you would multiply the 4 cylinder tach speed by 4.

I assume you are working with a four-stroke engine?

All the cylinders of a four-stroke engine fire within a two crank rotation interval, so there would be 2 ignition pulses per revolution, in that example of a 4-cylinder engine. (ASSUMING neither the example 4-cylinder engine or your engine have "waste spark ignition".)

You would be connected to the ignition for ONE of the cylinders (only), so there's going to be ONE ignition pulse for every TWO revolutions.

You can buy "inductive pickup tachometers" for $8 and up on ebay, that might be worth considering.
