53 Jubilee fluid leak

I'm a first time tractor owner, trying to learn my way around my tractor. I've been dealing with a pinhole radiator leak on my 53 Jubilee. I added some Bars Leaks to the radiator. While I was letting the tractor idle and warm up, I noticed fluid leaking from behind the starter, running down and dripping from the bell housing. I caught some of it in a pan, it looks like thin, dirty oil. I couldn't tell if it was engine oil or trans fluid. I've only had the tractor a short while, and never worked it at all, just drove it around the block a few times. The tractor has had a small leak from one of the hydraulic lines that I've yet to repair, and that was what I thought was the source of the drip at first. But on closer inspection, it's coming from behind the starter, and also seems to be coming from a hole on the other side through the hole you can view the flywheel through. I drained the transmission and only got about a gallon if thin, dirty looking fluid out. I'm going this evening to get new trans fluid. I read some other posts describing similar problems, and I checked the cotter pin drain underneath, it didn't seem to be plugged. Any ideas what the issue could be?

Also, I don't know if could be at all related, but I took the oil air cleaner cup off and it was full of greasy water. I replaced it with fresh oil before running it today.

Welcome to Tractor Row Blackriver!
I'm the proud owner of a strapping Jube too. :D

If the oil is showing up on the engine side of the flywheel
getting flung up and around
and is dripping out the bell housing cotter pin hole underneath
. . . it sounds like crankshaft rear seal leakage.

If so, you may want to up your oil viscosity to a minimum of 15W40 --if you're not there already -- while you contemplate your options.

Good that you got the rainwater out of your air cleaner and put in fresh oil. No abrasives making it through the carb.

I bought an old Oliver bulldozer from an old guy for just $400. because he had dug himself a big deep pond, which took a long time, but he had no NO air cleaner on the poor Crawler! Same Marvel carb as the Jubilee. No choice for me but a complete rebuild. Got it running and used it a few times to rip up garden plots but it was knocking and burning serious oil so I sold it for what it cost me. Didn't feel like any more engine rebuilds.

I put new 80W90 gear oil in my transmission
and 75W110 synthetic in the rear end -- just my pref.

Thanks for the reply. I thought about switching to a thicker oil, don't know if it will help but worth a try. I guess replacing the rear main seal requires splitting the tractor and pulling the crank? I've never done it on this size engine, but guess I need to learn.

Also, I bought 134d fluid, is that ok for the transmission or stick with the 80w90?

Blackriver,
You wouldn't have to split the tractor or pull the crank. Whew!!
You would have to drop the pan and unbolt the rear main bearing cap. Overall, it's a perfectionist type operation compounded by the fact that you are lying on your back.
Warm weather job. :)

A new wick type can be installed but the apparently easier route (especially for the mechanically inexperienced) is a new neoprene replacement for the wick style.
Someone here might have the part # for the neoprene replacement . . . something like C0NN6701A.

Sorry but I don't know what 134d fluid is. If it is hydraulic fluid, I would probably stick with the heavier gear lube for the old Jube.

I have recent Jubilee rebuild experience. :). You can do it without splitting the tractor and pulling the motor but you'd have to loosen the middle and front crank caps and drop the crank down a little.

I'd use a neoprene seal. Easier to thread around the crank. I tried a rope seal and gave up on it.

Remember: lip on seal in.
