pinion removal

I have my new rear housing cleaned up and painted and ready to go. I am using the ring and pinion from my old housing. My question is do I need a puller to remove the pinion assembly or does it just pull right out after I remove the 6 bolts that hold it into the housing

You may have to thread a bolt in the end of the pinion and use a slide puller to get it out.

I have 3 - 8N's that I am SLOWLY getting overhauled . Two of them had chipped pinions . I had 4 extra rear ends. I ground off the rivet heads on 2 to remove the splash shields and bearings . I have 2 more that still have the pinion bearings . I kind of like "If it ain't broke tear it apart to see how it works and hope you don't break it " philosophy . I don't remember why I did not want to drive the bearings out of the front .

After reading one of your posts about the drive screw I reached in yesterday and I could feel the other end sticking out the back side . Hopefully today I find time to see if I can tap the screw / rivet out backwards .

I have an extra drive shaft coupler that connects the transmission to the pinion . I plan on cutting the ends off and welding an old 3/8" drive socket to the ends so I can use that with the inch pound torque wrench to set my pre load . The out put splines on the trans are the same size as the input splines from the clutch so that one socket will check the trans .

The bearing bore is a straight thru hole. Once the pinion is out you can knock the bearing out in that direction to replace it. No need to remove the oil trough and drive screws.

I remember reading that , of course after I had ground off the heads . I don't remember why I wanted the bearing to go out the back and not the front ? I think ( from memory ) the bearing is tight and the splash guard restricts the surface area available to drive against and from the front you can get a long pipe / driver straight in and take a long swing with the hammer where from the back space is very limited .
 
I went to the shop and was able to easily drive out the rivets from the backside and remove the splash guard . I did not see any splines so I will assume it is a rivet . Mic'd it at .2570 - .2580 x 1.25" After removing the splash guard I lightly tapped the rivet back in the hole and did not feel that it was tight enough to reuse . A 1/4 x 1-1/2 " bolt would work but is just a little loose . A 2" long bolt would also work as neither end is any where close to the ring gear .

I had difficulties trying to remove the bearing from the back without removing the guard . Space is limited and I only wanted to apply force to the outside edge of the bearing and not stress the inner cone or roller pins . Those bearings are about $70 . I even wedged in a small hydraulic jack and small steel block from the back with no luck . Maybe it is just me , but tapping it out from front to back is easier in my opinion .

Now to get the smell of gear oil off of my hands :cry:
