Oil filter for Davis loader?

Per chance does anyone have a Davis loader and have you changed the oil filter on the pump? I have not opened mine up and I'm wondering if there is a Napa part number for a filter that will fit in there?

Below is a pic of the canister. I'd like to have a new filter on hand before I even open it up. But if no one here knows the correct filter, do I just take the old oily one in to Napa and say, give me one of these?

I'll no doubt need a new gasket under the lid also. How do you guys find stuff like that for something that old?

I only see one connection point. Is there a second one I cannot see? If not how does that work?

If it were me I'd spend $35 and replace the entire thing with a modern spin-on head and element placed at whatever point in the system is convenient. Davis did some very non-standard things with their valves and filters. Here is another one of their over engineered solutions...

See the big orange hose at the top left of the filter? That connects near the top of the filter case in the back. I assume that the oil goes into the bottom of the filter and comes out that hose back to the tank.

Hokie, in caryc's photo, the large rubber hose in the background connects to the backside (as viewed in his photo) of the "can".

The filter is neat in that there's a brass screen inside the canister, and the wound cotton string replaceable cartridge fits inside of the screen.

A pretty good filter, really, including moisture removal.

MF number 1752177M1, replaced by Donaldson P550203.

BIG list below, of filters that are the same physical size, probably gonna be hard to find the moisture removing string-type anymore, though!

Thank you so much for the info. I assume the newer ones on the list will be cartridge type like the oil filter on my Ford 8N.

I'm wondering if I have to remove the brass screen to use the cartridge type filter? Well, I guess I'll find out when I open it up.

It's interesting to note that GB and I were discussing on the phone how the canister that I show above in my pic looks the same as the 8N's oil filter canister.

Well, Bob gave me the Donaldson number P55023 as a substitute number for the original Massey Ferguson number 1752177M1.

The list he gave me here for substitute part numbers has the Napa number 1010 or 1010 Gold.

That is the same filter that people give out here for a filter for the 8N. :wink:

Bingo!!! If you pull the old filter out, and the filter basket out.....I'll bet that the 1010 gold will slide right in!!!

Well, the filter in there now has been in there for the ten years that I've owned the tractor. Any kind of clean filter should be better. Since the loader still works good I don't have any intentions of messing with that filter any time soon.

I just wanted to be ready with a new filter in case I started having any problems with it.

Gottcha.....I'm going to our NAPA tomorrow to see if the filtration %, and microns match the MF,Hyster, Galion, and NAPA filters. with the efficiency of the #'s listed.
THAT, aughta be FUN!!!???
