I am working on a 49 8N and I need a new Long pin that goes on top of the differential. I can't find a part number in the manual or on any of the parts suppliers I have looked at. Anyone have a part number and/or know if new replacements are available?

The part number for the long hinged pin is: 8N486A. You will not find a new replacement anywhere since there were never any replacements made. You will have to find a good used original one. They show up on eBay all the time. I hope this info helps.

Are you referring to the long pin with the knuckle in the middle ? I bought mine from Fleabay but haven"t installed it yet because I can"t get the short one out of the holes . So, I"m debating whether to sell it or not . Maybe you can place an add here & over on the link_disallowed website .You may just get lucky . Good luck & God bless . Ken

Dumb question here......I think I know what the "long pin" is, the 1948 8N I grew up with did not have one but I have seen them on other tractors and wondered what the purpose/advantage is over the "short pin" we had. Can anyone answer this silly question I have had for 60 years (but was afraid to ask)?

(quoted from post at 01:21:27 01/09/13) OEM or reproductions not available.

Good used ones difficult to find.

I wouldn't think it would be hard to make one. Isn't it just two pieces pinned together at a hinge joint somewhere along the length? Anybody have a good picture and some measurements>

The 8N486A Ford pin was one solid piece. The Ferguson pin was hinged in the middle. The Ferguson pin has the same dimensions and will work on your Ford. Reproductions of the Ferguson pin are readily available from aftermarket dealers. Here's a picture of the two.

OK - I'll bite. What makes the Ford one piece pin special? How is it different (aside from hardening or heat treating) from any other solid pin that length?

Nothing special about it. Just a pin with stepped dimensions. Ford was required to stop making and using it because Ferguson held the patent. Part of their famous lawsuit. Ferguson later decided a hinge in the middle would be handy for some reason. After '49 if you needed a pin for a swinging drawbar or other implement on your 8N, you had to go buy a Ferguson pin.

Thanks Guys! I ordered one from nnalert. I don't understand why the pin needs to be that long but I do want to keep it close to original. For any 3 point work I might do it seems like a short pin would be just as good but since this is a family tractor I'll try to keep it as stock as possible.

DScott........the LONG pin was for the jingle-jangle support bars that kept the 11-hole drawbar at a constant height for towing 'specially fer backin'up. Unless you LOCK yer hy-trol handle, yer hydraulics will BEND yer support bars iff'n you try to lift it.

Remember for towing with the 11-hole drawbar, you haffta provide anti-roll devices 'cuz the leverage of the roundball trailer hitch will make'r turn-over.

Me? I like the under the diffy cranked tow bar with the turn UP so it smacks yer kneesies 'stedda yer ankle. The reason fer the "hinge" on the Ferguson long pin is so you can install it with the fenders ON.

BTW, the LONG pin was "optional", and necessary for very few applications. Use the SHORT pin with yer telescoping top-link. Do NOT use the upper top-link attach hole. It will "kill" yer hydraulic linkages. ........Dell

Dell,
Thanks for the info. I have the V brace on to keep the draw bar from turning. I have an 8n with some kind of extra rocker bracket that is mounted on the long pin below the standard one. In the picture below you can see that it is mounted below the standard mount on the long pin (I had the draw bar braces mounted on the outside temporarily). The lower casting is too narrow for the braces to fit in so I guess I'll take it off. This was my grandfather's tractor and all I ever know him to use it for was to mow pastures. Ever seen a bracket like this?

That's a bracket for a rear mount Dearborn sickle bar mower.

Thanks John! I have had this tractor for 20 years or more and I only realized recently that this was not the standard top link bracket when I tried installing the draw bar braces. I used it for years with a bush hog that had a chain instead of a regular top link.

I use Dearborn mower brackets on my vintage Fords to attach limiter chains for rotary cutters.

After reading the responses and thinking about our old '48 8N , I remember the factory-installed "short pin" was hollow (rolled steel) and wore so thin that we replaced it with a solid short pin (remember dad's cussing while beating out the old/worn hollow pin). I guess the hollow short pin is needed to use the long pin, is that correct?
My '54 NAA has a bracket like the rear-mounted mower bracket described here, but it is fastened to the rear housing of the tractor with a pin that is longer the an 8N "short pin" but shorter than the earlier Furguson long pin. I have never used the bracket, but maybe I should use it with the draw bar as Dell suggests, to protect the hydraulic system linkage?
