Yesterday I went looking for a old two bottom plow for my 1952 8n. I want to turn over about two acres of a sandy weed patch around our house so I can plant grass. Previous advice had suggested plowing it up, then discing it a few times, then planting grass. My buddy was going to loan me his disc harrow. The only plow he had was a middle buster. I picked up his plow yesterday, then thought "it's going to take me FOREVER to plow two acres with one bottom, plus I had doubts about how well the middle buster was actually going to turn over the soil, rather than just dig deep furrows. So... I went looking for a two bottom. Within 20 minutes I found what I was looking for at a consignment lot in Sealy, Texas. Here's what I have: Some questions to follow.

The tag is a little blurry. Definitely says "Ferguson-Dearborn" Model 14 AO 28. Serial number 106146.

Points are good. Not sure which type they are. I think they're "All Purpose." My soil is nearly pure sand.

Everything seems to be there except coulters, which I don't think I'll need in the sandy soil. Even the chains are there.

Questions... The top link connection is off set, not centered. It was previously pretty far to the right but this made the lift arms way off center. So, with great difficulty, I loosened the U-bolt nuts and slid the adjust bar over so that the top link connection would be centered. Is that the proper place for it? And should it be hooked up to the middle rocker arm position?

My first test drive did a good job except the plow started digging in deeper and deeper til the tractor stalled. I do have the draft control in the horizontal position. Could it be digging in because the top link is not adjusted to the correct length? Or, perhaps the horizontal adjust bar is not set correctly?

Using Draft control it seems as if it's all or nothing. How do you control how the deep the plow will dig in?

Once I get my field turned over, I'll probably have no use for this anymore. So, I think I'm going to restore it! Other than a bit of surface rust it's in excellent shape. Should be a fun project.

By the way, in case you're interested, I paid $295 for it. Maybe a little high, I'm not sure. But as I said, it's in great shape and is only missing the coulters. The guy I bought it from asked if I had a boom pole to unload it from the back of my pickup. I said no, but I might come back someday and buy one from him. He had several new ones. He told me to take one home today, and I could come back "sometime" and bring him the money for it!" How about that??
I took him up on his generous, and trusting offer. The pole worked great and I can see that it will be quite handy to have. He usually charges $100 for the poles but gave it to me for $85.

Once you figure out the right depth, make note of where that position is on the 3 point lever Hy-trol and set your stop. If you have the stop set too low, you'll sink the plow to china.

By loosening the U bolts and moving that shaft you probrobly screwed it up. Pay special attention to page two in Tim's Post. My father had one of these
plows back in the fifties It should work real well
in sandy soil.

Hey, Dave. When I hooked up the plow, the center of it was way off to the right so that the right moldboard was behind the rear wheel of the tractor and the left control arm wouldn't have even reached the hook up on the plow. I loosed the horizontal bar and slid it over so that the rocker arm hitch was centered. Later, I read page four of the Plow Book from another message board. It says the distance for a 14 inch plow should be 3 1/2 inches. I went out and measured my adjustment, which I had only eyeballed. It was EXACTLY 3 1/2 inches. Now, in the process I may have also rotated the draft bar a bit, but right now it has the plow sitting high on the right. I'm figuring that when the right wheel drops down in the furrow, the plow should be pretty level.

OK if the 3 1/2 dimension is correct, according to
page four you have a fourteen inch plow, that means you will want to plow 7 or 8" deep. The easy way to
set up is to put both left wheels up on about an 8
inch block, then adjust your plow so that when it is lowered to the ground, it sets flat on the ground
for front to back adjust the length of the top link
side to side adjust the leveling box on the lift
arm. Once you have it setting flat on the ground,
best to do this on a paved flat surface, look at the beams on the plow and see if they are parallel
to the direction of travel. If they aren't real
close, thats where you turn the bar that is held on by the U bolts to get as close as possible.
There is a way to adjust it perfectly to the "line of draft", but its easier to just go out and plow
with it and see how wide the bottom closest to the
tire is cutting. I couldn't find in that manual
where it said where to set the furrow wheel on the tractor, for a 14" plow the distance between the inside of the rt tear tire and the centerline of the tractor should be 25 1/2". Any questions, Email me .

Dave, if I need to adjust the draft bar, how do I do this? I know I need to loosen the ubolts but in the plow book, it looks like the guy is using a wrench to turn the draft bar. I don't see anywhere where a wrench would fit. I guess if I loosen the bolts enough I could tap it with a BFH?

Nice look"in plow, make sure you grease up the moldboards when done to keep"em from rustin up. Use lower hole in top link. New hard ground will fight ya but the next time you plow that plot it will git EZ"er each time. Don"t try and go deep concentrate on a constant dept and git"n the dirt to roll over even so as not to have to fight the tractor to go straight. Use a light draft first go round.

Looks great! I paid $290 for mine, so I'd say you're pretty much on target (at least for Central MN prices).

I'm going to restore my plow this winter, I'm hoping.

I have basically the same plow, and I removed the coulters because they kept trashing up so bad when I would plow my 1/4 acre corn patch under in the fall. There was recently an excellent post here on setting up a plow - do a search and you should find it. The really short version is to park your N and plow on level ground, and adjust top link and draft arm level box until the plow sits level on the ground (for your first pass). Once you've opened up the field and are ready to drive in the furrows, you would readjust the leveling box so the plow sits flat with your right tires in the furrow.

I have an original Fergeson model AO plow manual (©1955) which I will try to scan and post on my web page for reference when I have an extra hour of time (hah!).

Kenster..... .would you believe you control how DEEP yer plow goes by yer "Hy-Trol" lever by yer right hip-bone?

Alway PLOW from LOWEST hole in the 8N's 3-hole rocker. The upper holes are hydraulic amplifiers for sensitive control of weeding shovels. NOT for PLOWING.

Don't know about the plow's toplink brackets needing re-centering. That might have been used on someother cat-1 3-point tractor without the adjustable link lever crank to level out plows.

Biggest mistake beginner plowers make is plowing TOO-SLOW. Try 3/4-throttle and 2nd-gear. The 8N Ford OWNERS manual has 12-pages of excellent instructions on how-too plow with pictures..... ..Dell
