i am attempting to install rear brakes on a "41 ford 11n tractor but cannot remove the drum. we removed the axle housing looking for some type of retaining clip but can"t find anything. the axle flops around but it won"tcome out. what am i missing?

You are probably missing the BFH part. Try beating the drum pretty hard to break the paint and knock it loose. Keep beating and moving around the shoulder until it breaks loose. Do not be shy with the hammer.
I find a 3-lb drilling hammer to be very handy working on old iron. Cheap ($13) short handle (10" or 12") and good heavy head. Available at any good hardware or home center.
You do have the two big screws out and the shoes backed off, eh? Screws are right there between the lugs. Big countersunk heads, maybe 3/4" diameter. 1" maybe. Beat a chisel against the side of one end of the slot convinces it to start moving.

I DO have an 8N and am having trouble getting the nut(s) off the end of the axle. It looks like it might be double nutted with a ring clip between. There is no visible means for keeping the outside nut on, unless it is double nutted. Both nuts are quite thin. How do you break the outside nut free, if it is a double nut ( not room to get two wrenches on them)?
HELP!

Good morning. That is a single nut with a wire clip. The wire clip is not a complete ring and there is a gap, find the gap and pick the ends of the wire out of the nut and remove the clip. The nut will come off. That nut torques to 450 ft-lbs. 450; that is all of you putting a sincere grunt onto the end of a three or four foot cheater.

First of all, no such thing as an "11N". ONly 9N (1939-42), e2N (1942-1947), and 8N (1947-1952).

If it is actually a 9N or 2N, there are 6 studs with nuts on the ends located on the outside end of the axle trumpet housings. Remove those 6 nuts and the entire axle assembly with the brakes will come away from the tractor. On these tractors, you had to remove the axle in order to work on the brakes. ONce the axle is off, you can remove the brake backing plate and work on the brake assembly. Hope this helps!
