RTU oil leak

Looks like I'm finally going to get some time to getting around to painting the RTU. I took it up to the car wash and cleaned it up with degreaser and hot water. I ran it off the trailer and found a few leaks. The one that looks the worst is 80/90 dripping out of the hole under the [for lack of a better word torque tube] under the beltpully housing. I guess I'm resigned to splitting the tractor. Just wondering what I'm up against once I split the tractor. I'm assuming the seal for the transmission input shaft is leaking. Also there is some gear grease leaking around both flanges on the axles where it bolts up to the differential. I'm really not to excited about pulling the axle housings off. I think I can live with a little leak. Any advice would be appreciated! Oh, it's a 1945 model. It runs good and has 25 lbs oil pressure. I don't plan on using it for hard work just puttsing around with it.

On an R it's easier to pull the axle housings than to split it. All you have to do is remove the bolts and pull the axle assembly out. Just don't mess with the brake adjustment if you don't have to. I had a friend who thought he could adjust them by measurements before installing, broke 3 brake pressure plates before he got done. Adjust them the way the book says.As for splitting it, it's a straight forward operation, no hidden tricks.

John, thanks for the reply. Looks like its gonna take a little more work than I thought. Which is usually how it goes. I ran the tractor in the shop for a few minutes and I noticed it is leaking oil between the two cylinder blocks. The only way I can see oil forming between the cylinder blocks is a bad gasket. So to do the job right Im gonna have to pull the cylinder blocks off to repair the oil leaks. Maybe I will try tightening the nuts first, but I doubt if that will stop it from leaking oil. I have an I&T manual for the tractor. Im thinking maybe I should get a Minneapolis Moline RTU manual. Its probably a little bit more informative.

You can try and lightly tighten the block bolts but make sure and check you valve clearance afterwards as it will change it. Most of the time it is one of the soft plugs or expansion plugs that leak oil. If you do remove the block or blocks I would put new ones in.

good morning Allen. Well good news I tightened up the nuts on the blocks and the oil leak stopped. What are the chances of that! I got to thinking that maybe the headlight bracket so I have are the right ones. I m going to try and send a pic but I have been having trouble sending pictures. I m sure I ll find a couple other miscellaneous parts I need. Looks like I need the top half of the clamp that holds on the muffler. Thanks again for all the input. Dale
