Water pump shaft play

Hi. Putting together 605 power unit

How important is impeller shaft end play?

Put water pump on, engine spins fine , check it a

bunch as I am tightening nuts. When water

Pump is totally Tight engine still spins fine.

But shaft now wont push in the .025 it did

When it was not bolted to tractor.

Is this a problem? Thanks.
 
YES... You need to add shims between pump and front cover plate. But ,025 doesn't sound right. My books aren't at this location. Without any end play you will wear out the brass thrust collar.
