ZTU Steering Bearings

I am working on a total restore of a 37 ZTU. The worm drive steering shaft bearings and races are badly rusted. I have removed the shaft, removed the bearings and removed the races from the shaft and the adjusting plug. I have also removed the metal cap on the front of the pedestal. I can obviously see the race inside but there is no way to drive it out since the pedestal casting completely covers the race. Any ideas or suggestions?

Make sure there is a race there an not just machined cast iron before you go too wild. I will have to take a look in the parts books to make sure. Not sure on some of the early ones as a lot of times they just machined things right in castings such as camshaft bearings on the R and Z engines.

You can tell there is a bearing race in there. My parts manual also shows a race. However, after taking some emery cloth to it, it doesn't seem bad at all. I think I will polish it up and leave it in there for now and see how it works.

If there arent any indents in the race from the old bearing Im sure it would be just fine with a good bearing.
