working along on the m5 (1961) again today and I was sanding and using my wire wheel buffer to get the old paint off the front cast pieces and sheet metal to get it ready for priming and painting. I can't find any primer?? just the yellow paint and i'm sure this is factory paint. also it looks like some of the tractor pieces where painted seperatly and some where painted after assembley?? i'm wondering what kind of paint they would have used that stuck so well and lasted so long? in my experience you need to prep clean and prime bare metal and then paint, but I can't find any evidence of primer anywhere on the tractor.

Most likely contained lead, that is why it
adhered so well. If you start acting funny
we know you have been breathing too much.

No joke, be careful, use the right mask.
Back in the 70's I aquired a 5 gallon
bucket of navy hull primer. Lead based. I
used it to prime the chassis of my old
truck including the brake backing plates
and brake parts. Not even brake fluid harms
the stuff to this day. When I clean that
old paint if it is still in good shape I
leave it. Figure if it lasted this long it
is better then what I can buy.

Just like they took lead out of solder. Now you need a torch to work on this new crap. You melt the boards if not careful. Worked with lead and fumes from solder for 40 years plus. Ok so far, better if I can find GOOD lead content. Painting different.
MM primer really didn't exist in specific colors. MM used alot of yellowish primer mix in paint for red A4t's. Alot of this old paint had primer in it.
Back to work have to get the LEAD out!

I do where a mask sms, I have a good fitting one with the snap on filters on each side. I buy the filters for paint and body work. when I started on the m5 I had no idea what they used for paint so I masked up from the start. better safe than sick and sorry

yes time to get the lead out gb. (me too), with the primer mixed in with the paint I won't be quite so concerned about getting down to bare metal on the main tractor, just sand and make sure it's all clean for the brown, the sheet metal i'm being a little more fussy on, getting it as straight as I can and priming any bare metal and then paint.
