My Jetstar 2 has been getting a lot of play in the steering. I replaced the bad tierod ends I can turn the wheel more than a full turn before the tires move. Anyone know what could cause this and how to fix it

Check the overall action of the steering as you turn the wheel. Any point of delayed response indicates a problem in that area.

Watch the shaft in the steering gear as you turn the steering wheel.

If you have to turn the wheel far in excess of shaft movement check for worn U joints or worn roll pins in the joints on the steering shaft. There should be 2 or 3 joints to check.

If steering gear shafts moves in sync with steering wheel, then time to check the steering gear

Could likely be a problem of wear in several areas.

You didn't tell us what you have there. There are different front assemblies used on the early Jet Stars. Some of those do suffer from broken shafts, broken welds. Have some one turn the steering wheel while you lay under the front end and observe action/reaction.Dale

Look at where the plate that the inner tie rod connects to, where it is welded to the vertical shaft that goes up into the steering housing. The weld between the plate and the shaft sometimes breaks and causes what you are seeing. You will have to drain the oil from the housing and remove the housing, shaft and plate to weld it. There is a seal between the housing and the shaft. If you get it too hot the seal will be no good. Make sure you line up the sector, steering rack and worm gear correctly when you put it back together. It is easiest to just turn the wheels straight ahead before disassembly then don't turn it until after it is put back together, providing it is together correctly now.
