Hello all! Just thought I would give you all a small update of what I done over the last week on the '44 ZTU. I removed the valve covers and made sure all valves were loose. Went through the spark plug hole to address the culprit #3 exhaust valve that was hanging open. I believe I was able to get it seated properly with a long punch, lots of lube, and some light tapping. The fuel tank, after the first round of electrolysis, was littered with pin holes. Instead of opting to weld or solder the small holes and grind/file it all - I have had good luck using JB weld in the past, so I went that route. Someday I will look for a clean replacement tank, but at this point we are a week away from closing on our new house (so this should get me by). After doing the JB Weld repairs, I did a second round of electrolysis just to be safe. Tank still isn't perfect inside but I am taking some good precautions to prevent any junk from flowing into the carburetor.
Yesterday I stepped away from packing for an hour and got it all back together. Tank was primed, new fuel line, soldered a screen to the inlet on the sediment bowl stem, new spark plug wires and plugs, an FMJ magneto from Rudy Calin at Rebuiltmags, new air intake hose, carburetor rebuilt.. Today I hope to take a break from packing at some point to dump some fuel in it and see what happens. Lots going on around the house, but taking an hour or so to wrench a little helps me keep my sanity.
