4 Star leaking fluid

We have a 1959 MM 4 Star. When we have filled the tractor with specified fluids we have several leaks. One is where the brake housing is. Is there a seal in the brakes? Where is it located inside and how do you change? Where do you get the seal? I looked at Steiner's and this website and I see anything listed?

Also it is leaking by the axle housing just a little? Where do I get those seals? Are they easy to change?

Last question. We used the hydraulic/transmission fluids that Rural King sells. Any issue with the fluids?

Any assistance is appreciated.

On the inner side of the brake assembly is a round plate that bolts to side of the differential case. It contains the oil seal. I replaced the seals on my 4 Star. Used National 417344. I also have a note that CR 28699 is an equivalent. Once you pull off the brake assembly the plate is obvious. All brake and seal parts are on the outside of the differential case. #12 on page 57 of parts manual R-2013A is oil seal.

Don't remember if I had to drain some oil from differential to replace seal. Position of oil check plug will tell.

Outer axle seal is in the cap on the outer end of the axle housing. #35 on manual page 53. Seal is #36

I also replaced these seals on my 4 Star. Same seal as uses for brakes, however original was a wider seal so I used 2 seals on each side. I was able to remove/replace the seal through the bearing race.

On my axles the old seal had worn a slight groove ring around the axle which allowed it to leak. On replacement seals I left the new ones in about an eighth of an inch on the end cap to keep new seal rubber out of the groove.

Go to nnalert dot com Tractor Forum scroll down to User Manuals/MM tractors and you will find a parts manual for 4 Star. IT manual MM-201 has info and pictures of brake assembly

You have to drain the oil to change the brake seals and also put sealant on the bolts when assembling. The wheel and hub has to be removed to replace the axle seal, then remove the outer housing to access the axle seal.

So we used this fluid from Rural King:
As a straight SAE 20 weight product, Xtreme Tractor Hydraulic Fluid mixes easily with most OEM fluids and provides:

So we need to use a lot heavier oil?

It was already low when we purchased it. It sat for several years before we got it. So I'm guessing it is either the seals or we need to put a heavier oil in it?

You have received some very good info from these guys. If you need help on your parts search, we stock everything you could possibly need. River Dale Farms, 920 295 3278,

I have changed the brake seals in a Jetstar which is identical to a 4 star and I just jacked that side axle up pretty high and didn't lose much fluid while the seal plate was off.

There is a drain hole in that plate the seal is in and it needs to run downward. Be sure it is open too. For some reason there is no drain hole in the transmission case. I usually add one, about 1/4" dia.

So just to make sure I get the right stuff. Tractor supply has a 80W-90 Multi-Purpose Gear oil. Is this correct? this will still allow the Hydraulics to work?

Hydraulics are separate from torq/transmission/differential on the 4 star. My 4 Star came with Dexron transmission fluid in the hydraulics. Universal fluid should work there.
