MM GVI Steering assist

We are working on our 1959 MM GVI. Previous owner has messed up some thing on the hydraulic system, and it was also missing some parts when we received it. We have pieced together as much as we can and put on parts we got from another tractor. One issue we are having is once we start the tractor and basically touch the steering wheel it start to turn left automatically. You cannot turn it right at that point.

We also noticed at the same time that is happening the cylinder and pump start to get warm. We tried reversing the lines on the cylinder and all that did was stop if from turning hard left but we had no power assist then. We are not sure if we are fighting an incorrect plumbing issue, or a valve issue in pump or cylinder. Does anyone have a schematic for the hydraulic plumbing for an early GVI? Has anyone run into this issue before?

Thanks,
Ryan

It has to be that the steering assisst valve is stuck in the cylinder, and oil was going over relief so that is why the pump get warm. I would be afraid to plumb it backward.
I got the GVI IT manual but I doubt there is much info on this. I will post pictures tonight.

Here you go with the IT manual for the GVI steering. Hope this helps.

Just as easy to get another cylinder. Same used on Masssey 95,97 G704.5.6.7,8. They all
leaked. Flow divider on back of pump just proportions flow to cylinder.

Have any of the hyd hoses been replaced? Had a similar issue on my G705 when I replaced a hose that blew on the steering cylinder- I replaced it with one that was too small diameter and it would turn only one way on it's own and had to fight to turn it the other way. Never checked the pump temp as I figured out what the problem was right away.

Interesting, we have not replaced the hoses, but the whole system appears to be cobbled up. It looks like a previous owner build his own return by using a piece of pipe and brazing a fitting on it. Thanks, will continue to look into it.
